i have seen that price at places for an un powerd site ,totally unacceptable, but what do you do?

I checked it out and it said Powered site $30 unpowered $20...Is that the one you stayed at

HI Neil & Raine,

We have looked at going down the coast road during the Christmas period, and thanks but no thanks!! There are a couple of c/pks between Sydney & Brisbane that are part of one (or should I say 4?) of the c/pk chains that charge around the $150/nt for a powered site!!! The particular chain does not put their prices in their booklet or their website anymore - I wonder why???

Your title says it all, unfortunately. Those caravan parks will be full at those prices so they go on charging that amount and more.

I wouldnt go anywhere near there in the holiday period, even if they paid me!

A most unfortunate state of affairs and whilst some people are prepared to pay these ourageous prices it will continue to be the norm at peak periods.

I did hear of one in Canberra that charges $90 a night in peak periods, don't know which one though.

No wonder people free camp or avoid certain places !! furious

If enough of us free camp and let these ripoff merchants know why we are doing it they may, just may get the message and lower their prices.

Problem is Vic, most people who pay these prices are workong people who can afford to pay these fees, they also only spend about 2 weeks in a place that charges these fees, really it pushes us GN's out at the peak times, but then we are welcome at other times, I say bypass ALL caravan parks whenever you can.

Bush camp is the way to go.

Bush camp is great, I don't mind going to a van park that charges reasonable prices though, they are trying to earn a living but not ripping people off to do it.

The problem with the Jervis Bay area is that it's a location favoured of Canberra residents for family holiday getaways. During the period from Christmas until the end of Jan they are always full - no matter what they charge. I prefer to stay well away from the coast at these times. I'll be at the showground at Berry (near Nowra) tomorrow for a couple of nights. Last time I stayed there it was $15 a night. I can ask if they put their prices up at Christmas if you like. It's not actually on the coast but it's not far from it.

One word for these places....... boycott, boycott boycott,oops I mean batsman and I don't mean the fast bowler, Geez u can rent a house or unit cheaper these days.

And remember at peak time when it is the dearest, the bloody parks are full of screaming kids and drunken parents.That;s my 2 bob;s worth

That was the first place I rang......... all full up. We stayed there earlier this year, great spot

One of the issues with being on the road full time is where you go for the Christmas/January school holiday period (and Easter). Currently we are at Sawtell (just south of Coffs Harbour), we're leaving here the day school holidays start when the prices almost triple, decided to spend the school holiday period at Armidale in the New England highlands this year. I don't actually have a problem with park owners making their money when they can, the holiday trade is totally different to the nomad trade, it doesn't last long and who wants to be staying at the same place as the 'family holiday' crowd anyway.

There's always richer people than us who will pay these prices, they have 2/3 weeks, bend the plastic card fairly well & thats it for the rest of the year while they pay it off.

We have a site at a local park for the last 30+ years, said that we would keep it for our retirement days, think this will be our last year due to costs.

The cost of 2 weeks would give us 6weeks some where else during the quite times. I could even drive out out to this beach every day for the 2 weeks & catch up with the friends & be a lot cheaper.

I live in the area and and what ever you think of the prices, its a wonderful place and Jervis bay is not the only place that charge hight prices it all a case of demand, try the berry show grounds we locals hate the holiday as we can't move on the roads the shops are crowed. the beaches are crowded, but having been in Business our selves its a fact of life we need the tourists to keep us going thou the winter months others they would be closing down like so many other places

I understand what you mean Cannylass, I used to live at Tathra 20 years ago. The locals all took holidays elsewhere, and you could never get served at the local shop, or find a car-park. Still go there occasionally and it seems quite a few of those local shops are no more. Sad. disbelief

I lived in a Broome caravan park for 9 years. When I first moved in the trend was to up everyone's rent for the peak season, June to September.
But new ownership changed it and the long-term residents were on stable rent.
Of course we all know what happens in the peak season in Broome and other northern destinations during the dry season which is the southern winter.
If you have to go to these places in peak times, you just have to accept it. Keep you stay to a minimum and move inland or smaller places where they're happy to have you for much less.
It's a slap in the face when they greet us at the gate with one hand out and the other in the pocket ringing up the profits on the calculator.
To pay that much for a patch of grass and a power point is a big stretch.

Please explain. What is a 'caravan park'. Seen the signs but dont know what they are used for.
