Just letting travellers know that the free camp with power at Leyburn that has been used regulary in the past........the power has been turned off indefinately.
We were there for couple days late Nov when the Council came with electricians, disconnected the power, threw everyones power lead on the ground and left. Apparently a local abused it by using the free power for 3 months while she built a house nearby. Caravaners in the past got the key from the General Store and made a donation for the power. Theres only water there now.
It might have been a smarter move to bill the local for power than to cut off power to the touring public who spend money in the area, and who will stay for a shorter period now there is no power, me thinks a bit unwise.

They probably have no way of billing the local who used the power, there is presumably no 'contract' as such in place, as it was said in the original post that travellers were expected to just pay a donation. So they have no legal means of requiring them to pay.
We went to pay at the general store and shop keeper said just plug in ? so we bought $47 food and spent $20 at the local pub and bought some petrol. If all caravaners spent that, the town would benefit but now its all over.

Power has not been generally available for quite some time at Leyburn. There may have been some exceptions but the box has been locked for a while now.
It is used by the company that supplies the mobile showers etc for the Leyburn Sprints which are usually held in August
I was there about 10 days ago and chatted with the guy in the shop and he said that they are considering some alternatives with regard to the power but it still may not be available to the public.
There is now lighting in the toilet and the toilet cistern has been upgraded.
I also suggested a donation box/pole and he advised that one can make a donation at the shop.....not quite the same IMO.
Payment is made for the use of the showers (located behind the tennis courts) at the shop where you also obtain the key.
BTW...power was also not available when I was there in April this year and power icon no longer appears in the CAW6. It is #745.

In places like this, would it not be possible to put in a coin-operated box for power, suitably protected with heavy metal sheathing, so visitors can pay for what they use? Cheers, Tony
