Staying around Sydney

We are intending to visit friends in Sydney around April next year. Don't really want to stay in Sydney proper so we are looking at suitable CP's or showgrounds near-by (50 Kms or so). We would then travel into the big smoke via train. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks in advance Brian & Cheryl

Probably the closest CP you will get on the north side is in Lane Cove.

On the west probably Vineyard

On the south, not sure maybe Stanwell Park or Helensburgh

You will need public transport for all of them. The one on the north side you would catch a bus and the others there is the train

We have relatives in Western Sydney (Plumpton area) and with a dog we stay at http://www.avina.com.au/ Vinyard area

Nice Park in a rural location, that has a large off leash area for dogs. Amenities are good, however many of the campsites are on a slope though we have always asked for a level site near the amenities. The train line is at Vinyard a few km away.

Before we had our dog we stayed at

Nepean River Holiday Park Emu Plains/Penrith http://www.nepeanriver.holidayvillages.com.au/ OK park and near a railway station

&

Town and Country Estate at Marsden http://www.towncountryestate.com.au/ Located in a rural area, our first stay there was really good, the second we were located in a different area and that was OK. No idea re public transport.

Central Coast area (around Gosford) is beautiful, lots of places to stay, and the train service is excellent. Takes about 1 hour to CBD, less if you choose someplace further to the south.

There is some type of free/cheap camping at a club at Richmond. Maybe someone knows about it.

Big4 at Narrabeen is fantastic, not real cheap, but buses to Manly or the city run frequently and the park is not far from the beach.

Oh and from Manly there is the ferry to Sydney (fantastic)

Gday...

The Richmond Bowls Club has the Wanderest Camp .... see this website -

http://www.wanderest.com.au/

I have stayed there - it is really good ... they have only 3 nights stay ... but when I stayed there I had a Dr appt and needed to stay 4 nights and they very readily agreed to the extended stay.

Hot showers, toilets, power, water. I can recommend it quite thoroughly.

Cheers

John

Lane Cove River Tourist Park in Nth Ryde (MacQuarie Park) get my vote every time.
Probably the cheapest park in Sydney and winner of a wide range of tourist and eco awards. And only 10Km from the CBD.
Bush setting with slabs to all sites etc.
Onsite Wood fired Pizza.

Cafes and shopping mall close by.
Train at the end of the steeet to the City.
And for seniors don't foget the 'Seniors Day Ttripper Pass'.
$2.50 gives you all day travel on trains, buse, Light rail (Tram) and harbour Ferries including the River Cat to Parramatta.
Cheers, Ozjohn.

I lived near Manly for 20 years so only know the north area of Sydney well

St Ives Showground is probably about the cheapest spot to stay& only about half an hour drive into the CBD. Just pick a time when they havn't got an event happenng there.

The Lane cove River Tourist Park  is in a beautiful bushland setting right on a river & not a bad price too.

The one at Narrabeen is in a lovely spot right near the beach but about an hour drive from the CBD & very expensive I believe.

Cheers

Jon

As has been said earlier, the Richmond club offer is a good one. Very friendly & accommodating, great pricing ($0 to $10), close to train transport direct to the city. Also if you wish to PM me I can give you details of a CP in Bundeena (Port Hacking, Syd. South) & Bonny Vale in Royal National Park.
