Our granddaughter has just been selected for the Army gap year programme, she has to report 16th Jan and go to Kapooka for her recruit training.
Apparently there were only 100 or so selected from all over australia for the 2012 intake.
Twelve months in the army, will give the financial backing for her firsy year at Uni in 2013, plus of course the invaluable experience she will gain during her stint.

Well done Grandaughter. What a great base for her future.
I think thats great !! .. have a nephew in service at the moment .. its a good character builder and eye-opener that never hurt anyone unless it needed to ..
see .. even Vic did time .. and I was there in '78 .. but Vic is much older than me though .. (hehe)
It is so good when your grandchildren are starting out on thier careers you are so proud of them I know we are of ours good on her goinsoon a real proud grandad and rightly so congratulations to your granddaughter, Helena
I might be a dinosaur, but I think we should bring back national service. It didn,t do me any harm.I am not saying that all 18 years olds should be drafted into the army, but should do some form of training to instill a bit of dicipline in them.Perhaps the fire brigade or nat parks etc. There seems to be a lot of disafected youth around. Bill

I totally agree Bill, I had a nephew that wouldn't/didn't work, at one time was on drugs and no interest in life in general. He decided to join the Army and was fortunate enough to get in. He took to the life like a duck to water, has been to Timor and Afghanistan, still loves the Army and is a different person altogether, I could not believe the change it made in him.
I think having some choices like you said with civil or ADF service would make all the difference to some of these young people and their attitudes and behaviour.
PS: Pic of me at Kapooka, note the dinosaur weapons (I am on the left)....
I feel for her, Kapooka in January wont be easy in the heat. Character-building is usually difficult! Good on her for getting in though, it sounds like a brilliant program, and I wish her well!

I wholeheartedly agree. I have one grandson who could do with a program of this type - would definitely sort him out.

I agree 100% Bill National Service is in my opinion the time when a lad becomes a man. They should never have abolished it, only my opinion.

haha I don't. Think of the poor buggers that would have to put up with the little blighters, and train them etc in this current age of political correctness. I did 22 years in the RAAF and saw the changes over the years. In the early 90's I spent a few years as a SNCO at a training base and the trainees could be a real pain in the b*m, and they were the ones who chose to be there. Imagine what the ones who didn't wan't to be there would be like. They wouldn't even let me lock them up by that stage either. But they sure did volunteered for a lot of extra duties sweeping and polishing floors after their classes were finished.
Oops, nearly forgot. Congratulations to your grandaughter too GS. Very good effort on her part.

I must admit that the rsm (rymes with something else)at Kapooka was NOT one of my favourite persons as we used to get up at 5am , and square bash in june in the middle of the southern winter. But it didn,t really do me any harm. I would have loved to say"kiss me good night , Sargeant Major!", but he probably would have shot me with an SLR.I ended up with a cushy job in the enginneers, which helped me in later life. I wish my son had to do the same.Bill
I am really touched by the lovely sentiments expressed by all here, it just goes to show what a great forum this is and what a fantastic bunch we have here.
Thank you everyone
