Was shopping today and thought I'd get some prawns - from WW supermarket. Had the idea of avoiding crowds on Xmas Eve and also making sure I got the type I wanted. They had boxes of still frozen ones out the back, so there's no issue about refreezing defrosted ones. The sales person told me their Xmas price will be $5 a kilo more than I paid.
So, if you have freezer space, might be worth while getting in early.
just paid $21.98 Kilo at wollies here Perth, got 2 kilo's because I'm a pig, Christmas week they will be $30
And there we all thought you were a Wombat.
I am a wombat on GN but I am also a pig when it comes to prawns, Mrs W has just gone out so I think I will thaw some out and just say we have mice again dear, if she see's any are missing.

If buying now, buy the frozen ones rather than fresh and then freeze them, and definitely not the "thawed for your convenience" ones. The frozen ones are snap frozen very soon after being caught and cooked.
Its nice being a fisherman at times. I just bought a carton(10kgs) of endeavour prawns,15 to 20 to the kg, for $75 from a trawler owner friend of mine. I think that works out to $7.50 a kg, and , in my opinion, debs are the one to eat. Also , fresh banana prawns are great. We get them here afterthe wet, usuall March or April. They will go well with the coral trout and mackerel. Its a hard life , but someone has to do it. Bill

I refuse to buy prawns from coles or woolies don't even think they look appealing, we get ours straight off the boat, have to be early though..........

No it don't not count, only because you have now gone off topic
When we worked on trawlers in the 70's we were going to ask a computer, "How many bananas do they catch in a prawn season?" SA has the best King prawns. Tigers are the next best, then debs, and bananas are on the end of the food chain. Very bland. Price is always the problem unless you know someone and they fall off the boat. They have to keep such strict records and have to account for every prawn, catch and $'s. The days of cashies are quite rare these days. Last January I went to Pt. Lincoln for the Tunarama Festival, and my daughter and her fella bought me a crayfish all for myself. I requested the bread and butter and the vinegar and I was in Lincoln heaven. I have to admit, I couldn't eat it all, even though it was just a little (legal size) one. Very sweet though. These things are all seasonal now, and if you can get them fresh off the boat before freezing, or cooked and snap frozen you'll have a good prawn with no ill effects. I'm quite good at shelling if you need some help. Prepared to travel.

I find tigers and king prawns tough, and usually the are the ones we exported to the japs as you get the best prices for them. I owned and worked a trawler I built myself for a number of years, and can say with some experience that the ones I like are debs and banana prawns. The reason you people are paying thru the nose for prawns is that Woolworths bought the whole 2011 catch from the gulf of Carpentaria for $7.50 a kg, and then sold them to you for $20 plus. My mate has his own retail outlet , and catching your own product cuts out the Woolies of this world, and you get a much better product. The big retailers are screwing not just fishermen, but farmers and dairy to name a few.I will enjoy my cheap prawns while I can. Bill
got tiger ones this year through the local setters fruit shop she orders them from up north, 5 kl 120 bucks a box, someone told us not to buy the prawns localy from brisbane area etc due to the floods that happened in january ,said if you saw what was floating down that river into the mouth of moreton etc ,you wouldnt eat prawns local for a while.
so we were telling the lady at setters in glassy fruit shop she said leave it with me ill get them for you and she buys them from up north they are pretty yummy too.
