Pauline,
would love to be where I could buy fresh from boat or co-op. We did that when travelling, from fish co-ops in places like Karumba, Townsville, Pt Lincoln.
It's a shame we are being screwed by the big boys. No free trade anymore. Farmers are bound and gagged by the same set of rules. I wish I could buy real fresh, unpasteurised milk, and fresh produce without driving a long way. I live "next door" to Adelaide's market garden flats, but they aren't allowed to sell at garden gate anymore. Tied up with rules made by the big boys again. We can't even buy fresh meat from the country butcher unless w travel hundreds of kms. What's happened to free trade? Anyway, enjoy whatever sea food you desire, and savour the flavour. You never know when you get another feed.

I have long been puzzled by the price difference between raw (frozen) prawns and cooked ones. Here in Perth you can usually get raw ones for about $11 a kg, but the cooked version is about $22. I cannot believe that boiling a few litres of water costs $11!
Mind you, I was charged $8.49 for a dozen eggs last week in my local Coles. Nice eggs, but they'd want to be at 70.75 cents each.
Cheers, Tony

When on the goldcoast you can buy direct from the trawlers not through a co op,fresh and cheap.Trawlers are situated near Seaworld but get there early cause when there gone there gone.
Most trawlers will sell if you are there when they get in. No good trying when they are unloading as they need to unload and get some sleep as they work every night (when night trawling).
When I used to cook the buggers I used to peel one each cook and bite it in half to check they were cooked and then spit it out. Shows how times change as I now buy the buggers sometimes.
When they are cooked on board we used to cook about 90 kgs at a time and we didn't get much extra for the cooked. The buyer dictated whether cooked or green
Where we did get ripped off is when the prawns were damaged etc they became the cheapest price irrespective of the damage. Often the head was removed by the crabs and then we got reject price and then they were sorted straight into headed prawns (the dearest price). Any small ones we were penalised kilo for kilo at the highest price and if we took all the small ones out they complained as they had none to sell for bait LOL
All the good prawns go overseas Australia normally only sees the middle sizes and the rejects.
No farmer fisherman etc can win as the buyers control the market.
Regards Brian
