peepers

G'day all

in preparation for the road as well as getting the rig all sorted I was wondering if it was worth investing some dollars in lasar eye surgery.

Not sure of the cost but I have always enjoyed 20/20 and find the decline in my vision very hampering especially over the past 3 or 4 years...... Could even be worth a trip to Thailand if surgery is too expensive here.

From my research there is a range of stuff you can have done in Thailand in excellent care for so much cheaper than Oz even if you have private health care. This ranges from eyes to teeth to knee replacements and other stuff that may enhance life on the road in the long term which is not accessible in Oz due to cost.

Just a thought and I would be interested in your opinions.

No way would I go overseas for any of those operations. not worth the risk.
The laser eye surgery is roughly a couple of thousand an eye. I wish I could remember exactly how much he said. My son was looking into it only a few weeks ago. Only certain types of eye conditions can be treated with the laser surgery.
Thats about all I know, hope that helps a bit.

Gotta agree with Marj.

I've seen too many disasters on TV resulting from cheap Asian medical procedures, and your eyesight is something far too valuable to gamble with in my opinion.

Cheers,

Sheba.

A personal choice for you to make.Your Optician would no doubt have told you that as we age our eyes weaken somewhat.I always had 20/20 vision until I turned 40,after that it was a progression until the eyes get to a certain state and usually stay fairly constant. As for going abroad for treatment I believe that you should do as much research as possible before you make a decision.Once again Mr Google usually has some pros and cons.smile

I would be very careful about going overseas for treatment as we get older our eyes do deteriorate slightly so be careful and do lots of research eyes are very precious. Helena

Hi Elle, I can understand your feelings re 20/20, but laser surgery is only done for certain conditions. Its certainly not cheap if available to you compared to wearing a pair of specs!

cheers

Glasses might be a bit "infra-dig" but they are a lot cheaper than surgery. And much less risky than trusting yourelf to the care provided in a country where standards are so different from ours.

You can even make a fashion statement with glasses, but I admit I'd rather just be able to see without them.

I like my glasses.   Look totally different without them.  Think I'll stay with the specs.

I would not rule out going overseas for surgery.  I have already had my teeth done overseas, and it was soooooooo  much cheaper, and excellent service, the dentist here was most impressed.   Thinking seriously about having another job done on myself.   As I say we only live once.   Thailand is very up there with the latest cosmetic surgery etc, dont know about eyes though.

If you have health insurance it works out very good.

Oh I didnt have my teeth done in thailand.  another country.

Go for it Elle

I'm with you Elle, I so miss my 20/20 vision. I have had prescription sunnies made with the three phase lenses and they set me back about $400 plus each time I get them and only get back about $180 from the fund.

When you add that up, it would work out cheaper in the long run to have the laser. I am checking it out this year when I have my eyes checked.

I do get peeved in the car when we travel and the other half asks me to look at a map etc and I have to take my sunnies off to put my readers on grrrrrr. Even the script sunnies are limited.

If the research favoured Thailands conditions, I would go for it myself. wink

Thanks all - it is an interesting issue. One of the Thai hospitals has been rated as the best in the world for particular procedures for several years running. And dentistry is so expensive here - $1200 per tooth for a crown. That would fund the return airfare and accommodation.

The eyes are a bit of a worry - maybe worth just having one done..... just joking.

I was really interested to hear everyones views.

I wanna know where a crown is only $1200? I paid $1500 for mine. And the health fund will only pay for a small portion of one per year.

you only here the bad news from over seas, at home here is doesnt make the news, besides they are probably all foreign doctors doing the operations over here any way.

O/seas procedures

We regularly go to Bali for our glasses. Have not checked on laser treatment as yet.

I have multifocal, graduated tinted lens and the cost was about $120 as compared toa quote of $600 from local OPSM.

We have also had dental work (fillings, cleaning etc) done in Bali. The dentist obtained his qualifications in Perth and his sugery was immaculate with all the most up to date equipment.

Cheers,

Patto

RE: peepers

How do you hear about the good places when you are over there Patto. I've been to Bali but had no idea about the dentist.

Anyone looking for cheap glasses try zennioptical.com.au. I've bought 4 pr from them, nothing over 20.00. You get your eyes tested here which is covered by medicare, Ask for the script before you leave. Go online choose the frame you want and fill in the details from your script. You get them within 2 weeks.

Hi Marj,

We go to Bali every couple of years and talk to fellow tourists. - same as this forum is a wealth of knowledge.
I also get onto www.balitravelforum.com which is nearly as good as GN forum.
Due to get new glasses in the next 6 months, plus clean and scale of teeth. The savings pay for half the trip.
A couple we met last trip had major dental work done (crowns and something else) and paid for the holiday and still saved over a thousand dollars compared to the cost in Perth.

Cheers
Patto

I like the sound of this Marj. I've saved the website.
