As this topic was under another subject heading, I thought it was important enough to have it's own heading. I have copied two of the posts I made on the other thread to here to avoid confusion and hijacking etc;
I think the original Eureka Flag may have been adopted from the Murray River Flags of which it was part, see;
As well as being a miner, Rafael Carboni was a lawyer and was the legal brains behind the Eureka Stockage fight for justice. He returned to Italy later and was nver heard of again. I had a book once called the Eureka Stockade which gave a more detailed explanation of his involvement.
Hmmm......think I'm going to get one!

On the subject of Australian Flags (I love the Eureka Flag best though), there is a group pushing for a new flag called Ausflag, see;
http://www.ausflag.com.au/
Please note that ausflag are not part of the push for an Australian Republic which is a separate matter altogether, although sometimes people confuse the aims of both, see Australian Republican Movement;
http://www.republic.org.au/
Both of these matters are very emotional and divisive so I don't want to start any controversy here among us, just wanted to point out the different aims of both groups for information.

When I raised this exact topic some time ago I was howled down and more or less told to pull my head in and then the thread was deleted. Just so you know. Not getting into any debate.

As my previous comments indicated, I do not want to start a debate on this merely pointing a couple of things out. I did not invite a debate on it.
I can't see why the information couldn't be posted, after all we are all adults and Australians and is something that could affect our future.
Are people afraid of being proud Australians and being mature enough to look at alternatives if that is there wish? I was not asking members to agree with the links, just posting alternative thoughts, each to their own beliefs.

I wasn't referring to any posts already on here I was just saying what happened when I brought up this subject. Sorry if you took it the wrong way Vic. Not intended to offend you in the least.
I, like you Vic, am certainly NOT afraid to proclaim myself a PROUD AUSTRALIAN!!!!!!
No offence taken Ma, I know we all have different opinions on this subject and I certainly wasn't trying to create a debate on it.
The original posts on the subject of the Eureka flag were off topic on the Grey Nomad Sticker and was a bit confusing, so I was just trying to separate the subjects and put it into perspective, not meant for a debate or divisive topic.
As Australians we all have different views and beliefs and so we should have, I wouldn't have it any other way, that is what a democracy is all about.

Maybe we need another section entitled Controversial. That would make it easier.
There are some who don't like free speech if it disagrees with their way of thinking Marg, for myself I appreciate anyones point of view even if it differs from mine.
Cindy steps in if a subject gets nasty, that is not the fault of the subject but because of some that give nasty replies to it and want to create a bun fight instead of accepting that others have differing opinions. This is not directed at anyone here in particular, just what I have seen happening on other forums and occasionaly here.

Your not the only one Ma, I often don't say things or express them the right way, although that can happen both with the written and oral word.
On the subject of flags, I was blown away by the Murray River flags when we did a paddle boat ride on the Murray, I had no idea these had their own flags (light blue stripes for upstream, and dark blue stripes for downstream being deeper water) it was good to see them still being used even today, we take a lot of our history for granted (or like me, wasn't aware of it until I went to the Murray). We still have a fridge magnet we got with the flag on it from our trip.

Gday...
I also believe the paddle steamers had a different flag for which river they plied (belonged to) - Murray River boats had their flag/s, Darling River boats their flag/s and Murrumbidgbee River boats their flag/s.
They were all similiar but different if you know what I mean ... colours mainly I think.
Thanks John, the more you see or know about Australia in towns you visit along the way make life and knowledge of our country so much more interesting.

I like the combined one Vic, I have never seen that one. I have always liked the Eueka one.

I always fly the Eureka flag alongside the current BLUE background Aussie flag.
Funny that those who laud the 'flag we fought under' don't recall that it was the one with the RED background that they 'fought under'.
All this despite the mis- understanding that my forebear was part of the Milita that marched on the stockade. Although recent research indicates that it was The Battle of Vinegar Hill that he was involved in. In any case the P%#@! disinhereted my branch of the family & we came to Queensland from Windsor.
Have got replicas of both of the Murray river flags & sent a full sized one to a mate who lives on the Murray Lakes at Mandura in WA. He flies it from his restored Murray Lakes fishing boat.
Me too Doug, the Eureka flag a nice flag. I saw someone with the flag on a T Shirt, looked pretty good too. Don't want to get into a flag debate though.
