RE: Check your programme guides

52 years going to the same place certainly shows no imagination.

I saw story a while ago, think in a paper where 2 couples had been going to the same caravan park for 39 years and always set up next to each other. I thought then they have no idea whats out there do they?

No imagination at all. I thought the same thing Marj.

It certainly isn't my idea of being a Nomad.

I guess it wouldn't do for us to all be the same.

Absolutely Pam. If they all got out on the road there would be no room for us to amble along.

Gday...

Unfortunately, I have always had a misplaced idea of what a Grey Nomad was.

I had thought (and still think) that a Grey Nomad is one who decides to spend their life in a wandering lifestyle seeing this country. My misguided interpretation was that this wandering was not just taking a four month holiday each year to visit either the same place/s or different places.

The dictionary defines Nomad as -  person with no fixed residence who roams about; a wanderer.

Seems there are not that many actual Grey Nomads I have met on the road albeit they have been great people to meet.

cheers

John

At least the people who watch this will go to all those fancy places and leave the quiet, out of the way, beautiful places to us.

You got it in one, we do a mix of free camping, reasonable price CPs, house sitting and staying with family (in the van of course)

let them stay in the parks if thay wish, my chioce is the open road and see as much of Aus as we can, have been doing it for just over 11 years and still more to see out there, the longest we have stayed in a park is 3 days, always on the move.

Those that stay in parks must enjoy it or they would not do it.

We plan on going to the same place again next year,(for four weeks) that will give us a total of two years running.

Only fifty more to go! (That will make me One hundred and XXX)

Hope we get to like the people alongside?

If it's om AC or TDT you know it's going to be rubbish.

I agree that both stories really have nothing to do with really being on the road........but people do what they can with the time available to them, at least they are not sitting in 5 star resorts (motels) thinking they are having a good time.

no·mad (nmd)
n.
1. A member of a group of people who have no fixed home and move according to the seasons from place to place in search of food, water, and grazing land.
2. A person with no fixed residence who roams about; a wanderer.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
migratory (mgr-tôr)
Traveling from one place to another at regular times of year, often over long distances. Salmon, whales, and swallows are all migratory animals.

What we saw tonight on ACA was a paid for comment by Big 4. It was a shameless add about how great a caravan park is.
Nothing to do with Grey Nomads (mechanised swaggies) just a few migratory people.

At least we got to meet Cindy.

Yes, Cindy is a very attractive woman, I couldn't quite make out her accent though, sounded like Australianized Canadian or American.  Her portion was the only really Grey Nomads part of the show IMHO, how many of us (particularly those one the road full time) can afford to live in 5 Star resort type caravan parks?   Pity the media didn't do a report on the real Grey Nomads.

Shirley watched ACA after seeing the add during the cricket in the afternoon.

I said OK, I have some stuff to do in the garage as it will be the usual add/infomercial for a caravan park chain as is usual for these supposed current affairs show. I also said for her not to complain that she lost 5-10mins of her life when the show was over.

Well she came out to the garage saying exactly what you guys have said.

I reminded her that my parents stopped touring as they aged and then went to the same Park in Hervey Bay from June to October each year. Over time they moved up the pecking order to the better sites. They became part of a community that continued back home in Melbourne.

I am sure their annual trip north, and the friends they made up there, added years to their lives.

It is a different mindset to what most on this Forum are familiar with, and although not for us personally, good on them for getting out there.

Besides whilst they are camped up in the Caravan/Tourist Parks for long periods there is more room for us out in the bush.

cindy was the best bit in the whole article .

I saw one of the programs and I think there is a need for both types of camping. I spent all my school years at a caravan park owned by my Uncle. We "worked" for a few hours then played the rest of the time. I doubt we Would have holidayed anywhere if we had not done that, we had no money and I guess it helped him staff the park in the busy times. I loved it as a kid and families still need that sort of thing.
Then the scouting years with my children and tenting and roughing it was an experience we enjoyed at the time. Again budget was a factor.
My brief experiences of the more nomadic style camping by rivers, lakes etc in my mature years is certainly more attractive now.
Horses for courses. The only unfortunate thing about the program was that it is putting across an image of wealthy mature people who feel it is their time to enjoy life and that's what they are going to do.... The baby boomer thing came up again and i cop a lot of this, dont know about the rest of you. Apparently us baby boomers are dragging the country down and we dont care about any one else???

Not all of us are in the position to do the luxury van park thing (should we wish to) but still would like to have the opportunity to enjoy this wonderful country of ours, experience as much as we can on our individual budgets. The added bonus for our type of travel is that we also get to meet some lovely people along the way and forge firm friendships as well. Thank you all for your friendship.
Tess

Welcome to the newbies too - I hope they realise there are travel options out there and that luxury caravan parks aren't all there is.  Apart from a number of cheap/free camping options there are also more affordable caravan parks if you look around.

By the way, so far I have travelled only staying at caravan parks (I travel alone) but after the Greens Lake experience I have set myself up a bit more for bush camping - I have the shower and shower tent and a better outside cooking setup.  Dad has put a couple of 12V plugs inside the van (and I have one outside).  Also, the van is going in to get the bed raised to provide better storage for the porta potti and to get the 12V setup completed as I now have a folding solar panel.

By the way I've also bought a bike, though I should have thought about storage at home - small unit and carport, no garage - but getting there.

Cheers Helen

I have a shower bag too but would have difficulty getting it up a tree - block and tackle maybe but a bit heavy to carry.  You may have a long lens on your camera but it is a visual I cannot comprehend, given I am not one of the thin people of the world.

I think I will stick to the 12V shower in a bucket in a shower tent.

And yes, I plan to go to CPs still - just a less often.

Cheers, Helen
