Gel Mattress

I was looking at the hype on TV ads about Gel Mattresses or overlays being cool, and thought, geez, these overlays could be good for caravanning in the hot weather.

However after reading these reviews I'm not so sure, has anyone got one of these and what is your verdict if you have (other than being expensive). See;

It was just a thought Bom, you know how hot a bed can get under a hot body during hot weather.......sounded good at first!

Does the dog like his/hers?

No Vic, the puppies don't seem to be too fussed on it at all.

Nothing is hotter than foam matresses. I still prefer the good old inner-spring in my van. I have covered it with 2 cotton mattress protectors to increase the padding, and it's never hot to sleep on.
In my camp bed I have one of those back-packer foam pads as the base of the bed is like a firm hammock. I use a doubled single bed sheet, and I find it is also very comfortable and surprisingly, not the least bit hot to sleep on.
I looked at a new dense foam, "egg carton" padding at Target, but it's still foam, and I'm not sure it's a good idea for me.

Good you've got some "quality controllers" to test these things Bom.....just goes to show if they aren't too thrilled with it then neither would we be.

CG, the egg foam is very comfortable, you might find a slice of that (Clark Rubber sell and cut to size would be great in your bedroll and make that mat a bit softer, the "egg" cup part of the foam is supposed to help the air circulate under your body, I've never found it a problem myself and it is more comfortable than our bed at home.

I just use a foam mattress, the one that came with the van. I have one of these http://www.empind.com.au/cat/index.cgi/shopfront/view_product_details?category_id=9794&product_id=302427 under it and have found a big improvement in the air circulation since fitting it.  I also only use pure cotton (no synthetics) sheets.

The egg foam mattress protector is a really good product - used one for years in the camper trailer - made a huge difference to the foam mattress that was supplied with the camper. Never found it hot to sleep on - good value for money - and Clark Rubber will usually cut it to fit for you. Don't know about the gel ones, but wouldn't the gel take on your body heat while you sleep, and get warm as well?

I sleep on the "egg carton" all the time. Great. I got another queen size one and cut down the middle length wise and one half into the Avan camper and the other half I keep and take away with me if not with the camper. I don't find it gets hot like solid foam, I think it is because of the egg carton effect/air circulation.

If you get the "egg carton" overlay make sure you get the one from Clark Rubber they are much better than the ones from the department store's. I have the yellow one.

Vic,

If your are close to Sydney, Canberra or Melbourne, worth a visit to Costco. New store to Australia, they carry a foam topper at a very good price. We have one in both our caravan here in Australia and our RV in America. Have used them for years, much better that the "egg" one from Clarks.

Welcome Debbie and Mike, do you know if any other stores stock the foam topper you mentioned, I have been told you have to be a member of Costco and they are in Melbourne and I am Sth West Gippsland. I probably could ask someone if they are going and get one for me but I like to see things first. If you can improve on a product, great.

Doug,

It may be worth the membership fee to join Costco even if you only shop a couple times a year. I have had mine for twenty years in the USA. Glad to seem them in Oz. I have found many great items for my RV. Not a great amount of choice, but, what they have is very good quality and a great price.

I think they will allow you to go in as a visitor for a look around, then join if you want to purchase.

Debbie

Thanks Debbie, I will have a think about it first as I am 2.5 hrs drive and have to go up into the "Rat Race". I actually try and avoid that as much as possible. I will however check it out next time in that area. DOUG

 Thanks aussiebrims,

No we haven't got Costco in WA (not that I'm aware of anyway), but will keep that in mind.  I know our normal bedding stores sell foam overlays not sure it that is the same thing though.  Will keep my eyes open, not in a hurry as I still have my egg one from years ago and have been pretty happy with it.

I need to do something about the mattress in the Nipper too. It's just a foam one. I'd like to have an inner spring, but they're so exxy for a good one. My sister raves about the 'egg carton' topper, and my brother has one too, but his just goes under his torso. He says no need for the whole DB size.

Opinions on that please?
