Feel sorry for the Possum, but it's a beautiful snake.

They are everywhere! our daughter and hubby have killed two browns in their bedroom in the last few weeks and had to kill a carpet last night that was wrapped around thier prize chook, he just wouldn't drop it (the chicken lived by the way) they felt they had no choice unfortunately as they also have a brand new baby choc. lab sleeping near by. It sure has been a good season for them.

Years ago when living in the Bega valley in a farmhouse we got to know a red-bellied black snake quite well. He lived in our garden and surrounding area. We were renting at the time and the owner warned us not to kill it or relocate it, as if the territory was left vacant another snake would move in and he might be a tad more aggressive than this one.

So we name him Joe, and learned to wear long trousers and boots (gumboots for me) in the garden, where we would often find him amongst the plants. He gave me a fright one day when he was up in the rafters of the verandah. I walked out onto the verandah giving him a fright so he fell at my feet, making a big thump, and nearly causing me to wet myself. Poor thing it took him a moment or two to move off.

He was a beautiful creature, glossy black scales, as thick as my arm and at least 2 meters long. We could always shoo him away by throwing chips of wood near him, and he did a good job keeping the rats down.

Unfortunately he couldnt keep the wombats out of the  garden! biggrin
