I grew up at Lobethal. The mill has closed down and is now an industrial park for smaller industries. Times really do change. Sometimes for the good, and sometimes not.

That was great Neil. Adelaide was the real "BIG SMOKE" back then and seemed a million miles away from Mount Gambier. Who didn't have an Onkaparinga blanket on their bed. You are right Granny, the times have changed and when you look at that, one does have to ask is it really for the best. Nice to travel down memory lane at times.

The best thing is the development and construction of the Great Eastern Freeway. That's a fantastic example of engineer to make transport easier between Adelaide and Melbourne, and there's no TOLL. Be thankful. It's a pity our industries have gone. What's left?

Hmmm .. The old days eh .. ice skating in Hindly st at the St Moritz .. Weekend Dance nights (the "Shindig") down the bay at the Glenelg Town Hall where John Farnham shared the gigs pre "Sadie" .. Playing Rugby for Black Forest .. Fishing and surfing the mid south coast (Moana etc) .. the south coast at Victor Harbour .. Middleton etc .. York Peninsular .. and Cactus beach near the Sth Oz WA border .. Yep .. always recall my time in SA with pleasant memories .. Jon
Lived in Adelaide 1969-1985. So wasn't there in the really old days. But went back a couple of years ago and had a lot of trouble finding our old house. Its changed a lot in the last 20 yrs.
I agree about the TOLL. These new PPPs are never going to be toll free. Once the adelaide toll road was paid off tey stopped requreing toll. Once the PPP roads are daid off the private part of the PPP will still want hier money, and probably never even reduce the toll even when the road hads been paid off. They will probably quote upkeep costs then. what a laugh (sarcastic one that is).

I think the Adelaide Toll House only operated for about 6 years, closing in 1847 as no upkeep was ever done to the goat-track with the tolls collected & people power got it closed down.
Shame we can't still get things done.

I'm keen to learn how much of the eastern state's toll actually goes back to revenue for road maintenance now the toll system is privatised or should I say, corporatised.
Some things should stay under the control of the government as a utility, not a private enterprise.
