Rust never sleeps.

Got our Cruser out of 6month storage, looked underneath and seen a layer of rust on the balls on the ends of the live axle. Been underneath today with some wet an dry sandpaper and wd40 to clean it up. Was suprised how well it cleaned up. The Caravan yard that stored it for me had been starting it up occasionally,and shifted it a short distance back and forth. A trap for young players.

Id recommend wiping grease over any exposed machined surfaces like ball ends

 Incorrect, the exposed section of those machined balls are to be clean & dry. Coating them with grease will cause dirt & grime to collect & this will destroy the seals that keep the grease inside the swivell nuckles.

I would suggest adding some more grease into the swivel  housing to keep these areas lubricated from the inside when the steering is operated, also to lubricate the swivel bearings.

There is a small filler plug mounted near the top of the swivel housing , pump grease in with a small grease gun,

NOTE;;; Be sure to use a moly grease.

Jim,i used to have a series 2or3 Landrover on the farm, and the swivel joints were filled with oil. A surprise to hear you say they are grease filled on the 100series.

 Your right about the old landys, I have rebuilt more of them than I care to remember to. They were filled with oil & what a problem they were when used in sandy conditions, it got into the oil seals & groved the ball on the end of the diff housing.

Yes, cruiser's are packed with a molly grease, the seal around the ball is only a flat  rubber disc with a felt outer that works like a wiper.I have rebuilt many of these over the years as well.

Only last week I finished rebuilding my own as I stated in this section under ( a big job finished ) .  The nuckles should have a bit of grease added to them from time to time, through the filler plug as I stated earlier but doesent always happen.tend to think of them being full of grease so all is ok, not like the landy's where we filled them every service because it just runs out with a little wear.

Iv'e been doing these for thirty years, just make sure you use a molly grease.

Happy servicing;

Cheers,

JC.

Haven't you guys got your wires crossed, Kiwi-as is talking about items left in storage, so bare metal surfaces exposed to the conditions while in storage would be better protected e.g. by grease, but when brought out of storage, this protection would be removed.
