We will be tracking the Murray from Murray Bridge to Wodonga Mid March hopefully take at lease a month to do this and want to free camp along the river, does anyone have any suggestions or advice that we might need to know, we do a lot of travelling but never done the Murray.

The river is looking magnificent!!! In 2008 I camped at Avoca Dell Caravan park, opposite bank at Murray Bridge. It's a recreational area with boat ramp, but the river was about 2m below the bank level. Checked it out a few weeks ago and was most impressed. No matter where I've been on the river recently it looks lush and fresh and very healthy. The kids were fishing and catching heaps of European Carp, dumped of course. Yes, it's come alive again, and it's amazing. The river ends in the south at Lake Albert and Alexandrina, Goolwa. Check out the barrage at Goolwa which controls the river flow out to sea. It's one of those engineering feats created to ensure SA had water. Now they have to beg, plead and buy the water that comes down the Murray from the states which get it first. Just enjoy.

There are plenty of free camp sites pretty well all the way along the river. Possibly one word of caution is not drink the water though, it is not potable unless treated fully. It has been known to have blue green algae blooms and we wont even enter the water for wakeboarding/skiing or eat fish from it when that happens, completely killed a good easter 2 years ago stuck on the bank. Firewood is available but getting hard to find in some locations, we normally take our own when camping locally. Most access tracks are inaccessible when it rains. You're gunna love it! Take your time, ask questions, and pick your spots carefully. The river is still higher than normal, so proceed with caution in low-lying areas. Why aren't you doing south of Murray Bridge? The river is looking magnificent right now. It always looks brown, but the water is flowing clean. You might be looking for quiet spots if you're trying to avoid water sports and noisy boats. Have fun and count the bird species you spot.

Thanks everyone for your input, we carry plenty of water and only cook & drink with filtered water, we will be starting off from Port Willunga so I guess we can start lower down never been to SA so not sure exactly where the Murray starts, having a week free camping when we arrive then a week at Port Willunga Caravan park before we head up river. I understand that the bird life is spectacular and really looking forward to that, we live on the Northern Rivers of NSW and enjoy the wild birds that come down in our back yard every day, hopefully will be able to get some pic's.

We did a similar trip a couple of years ago, it was very hot in summer in the drought. The beautiful river gums were dying in some places, made me sick at heart. Would love to see it again now.

Brilliant book - Camping and Caravanning guide to the Murray River - by Craig Lewis and Cathy Savage. Boiling Billy publications. Got mine from Collins for $29.95. It covers from the headwaters right to the mouth and the Coorong. Excellent maps and lots of info on camping spots.
There are free camps all the way along the Murray from Mannum on both sides of the river which we have tried. Also at Loxton down on the river and at Renmark. The one at Loxton can not be used if it is wet though so if there stay put until it dries out. This was advice from a local.

Please make sure you let us know when you are going to be in the Echuca area and we can arrange a get together. While you are in this area I would suggest you pay a visit to Barmah Lakes and perhaps take a cruise on the Kingfisher on the lakes and along the narrow section of the Murray (Barmah Choke). I hope to do the reverse trip and go from Wodonga to Lake Alexandrina. I used to work on one of the paddlesteamers here at Echuca so I would like to see more of the river. You will certainly notice how the river changes as you move further upstream. It would be good if you could catch up with us. Lyn
