Giant Sting Rays at Hamelin Bay WA

Went to Hamelin Bay, a very attractive beach setting with a launching ramp and around the ramp were giant sting rays cruising the shallows. They must have been fed by fishermen returning to the ramp because they were very tame, their skin is velvety smooth and they dont mind being touched but I kept very clear of the tail with its barbs and sting.  JohnHamelin+Bay+031.JPGHamelin+Bay+045.JPG

What a wonderful experience!!! Lucky you.
I'll have to put that place on my bucket list.
WA has some amazing marine experiences.

I don,t know if you have ever been to Narooma , NSW, but down at the boat ramp on the northern side of the river , they have enormous stingrays, eagle rays, and some fairly large, and agressive , seals, who fight each other to get the skeletons of fish caught. Some of these rays are close to 3m across, and act as mobile vacume cleaners , if they can get there before the seals.Highly entertaining to watch. Will try to get some photos.Bill

You should be at the fish cleaning tables down there when you can, it is some great entertainment.

As Bill said, there are numerous rays and seals all vying for the leftovers.

Me too OG, he's an inspiration to us all, I read his blog (shown under his signature on his posts) regularly as there is a lot more info shown there.

Yeoeleven we went to Hamelin Bay hoping to have the experience you did, unfortunately the sting rays were not about. While we were there a large branch collapsed on a jayco camper with 2 children and 2 adults, the wife was very pregnant, luckily it missed everyone but the camper was a right off. Yes a great place with plenty of beautiful walks Glenda

Here are pics of the local fish theives who like to get the EASY meal instead of catching it them selves. Entertaining as they are , they weren,t such a problem to fishermen 5 or 10 years ago. I like the way they lay on their back while they are eating your fish. This on is at the Narooma boat ramp.Bill
