hi guys, in out motorhome (the tardis) we have the automatic / manual transmision
the other day dad had to move the van and found he couldnt get the van into gear , came up with some stupid error message on the dash saying check handbook, which we did, useless things they are, any way i suggested him to ring that number that came with the van, we still got a bit of warrenty left
the guy came out (from fiat ) for those that dont know we have a fiat based jayco conquest motorhome , any way , guy said battery had dropped well below recomended vaults or something , so over night charged the van up and took it for a quick run... all votls are fine now..
but having a battery so low, why would it affect the automatic / manuel transmission on it? couldnt move the gear leaver at all..
oh one other thing
we were told when bought the van, to leave it in neuteral when parked with handbreak on , but in the book it says to leave in gear with hand break on when parked over night etc...
If you're truck battery is unusually probably low from lack of use, its quite possible that the power required to operate the Fiat was too low.
It does require electronics to set the Fiats computer into action .. the other thing is to get someone to check your truck battery. Someone may have inadvertantly connected some 12v output to that battery instead of to your 'house' batteries .. this cold result in a slow leakage ..
I leave mine in neutral when parked .. and for your info too Milo, our Fiat Ducatos are actually running an "automated" manual gearbox. Its not a true automatic as seen in cars ..
we have no clutch Doug , in our tardis, you can keep it in auto and it changes the gears for you but you can switch over to manual mode, and can change the gears with out having to use a clutch
Hi Milo. My Merc has the same thing. I think its basicly the same as most car Autos, tiptronic type trans, all computer controlled and does require a min of 10v to keep computer active.
To all on here, do your self a favor , enter manual come auto transmission in the search window.
Have a good study of what I posted & learn from it, I took the trouble of explaining this to save people future problems & expense. However some have tryed to make out the know more , but dont know at all & are happy to continue with their way of doing things,
I knew it would not be long before these systems would come up on here & the associated problems. Then it will be my turn to say , told you so.

Peter, these units are not in any way, shape or form like a standard auto.
Please my post as stated above.

thanks Peter and JC, search is good but i do like to hear what others have to say about things sometimes we dont always agree but its nice for that human touch..
Milo, if the volts were low enough to effect the computors etc the motor would not start.
Being a automated transmission did you remember to put your foot on the brake pedal before you tried to select a gear?
All fully auto's require a foot on the brake before you can move the gear select lever from park, yours being a automated system I'm sure it will require the same application, it is a saftey devise.
These vehicles are NOT automatics, they are automated manual transmissions, that is they have a clutch & a normal manual transmission.
Reguardless of whether you select manual or auto the system works the same way, a computer controls the mechanical divices that you would do if you were driving a manual, that is in a gear change the system de accelerates, disengages the clutch, changes the gear & re engages the clutch & reaplies the power.
The only difference between the manual setting verses the auto setting is the auto set decides when to change gear & with the manual you decide when you want it to change, all ather functions work the same way.

Justcruisin yes I agree with what you are saying completly. I had a honda a few years back that had a similar type of trans and if you drove it as an Auto the trans would only last about 10-15000k before it just didnt drive anymore. I made the mistake of letting my kids use the car as a share thing, cost me a fortune replacing trans all the time. My new Merc is actually an auto/tip tronic not the automated manual. Well from what I understans so far thats what it is not sure about the Fiats etc.
