Converting to Electric Trailer Brakes

We have been offered to purchase a hard floor off road camper trailer from a friend. It is currently fitted with override brakes.

Does anyone know if it is a straight forward conversion to electric brakes ?.

Is it a matter of just replacing the brakes, backing plate etc with a new elec brake backing plate kit or can just electric magnet kit be fitted?.

Regards

Daryl

Daryl, you will have to do a complete change, that is the backing plate with the new brake shoes & magnets, as well as the hubs & brake drums as the drums for electric have a machined surface around the centre for the magnet to aperate on wiich is a different area to the surfave for the brake shoes.

You might also have to modify the backing plate mount on the axle, also check the diameters of the axle where the seal , & bearings fit , also the bearing spacing.  If these are wrong you may have to go a replacement axle assy ,  then you have to wire the trailer , fit a controler & wire the car as well.

Cheers;

JC.

Thanks Jim, biggrin

At this stage is just a consideration. I can get a complete kit consisting of all parts, hubs, bearings, drums and brakes for a reasonable price. I do have an electric controller packed away somewhere. Am capable of doing the conversion myself, just wasn't sure on exactly what I would need.

You have raised a possible issue with the axle sizing's. Will definitely be checking that out, too.

Will be having a better look at this camper in a couple of weeks. We are going to store it at our home for a while until the guy sells it, if we dont buy.

Thanks again

Regards

Daryl (oh !, and Syl)

What weight is the trailer, what will you be towing it with? Is it worth the trouble?

(that's not intended to imply whether it is or isn't)

At this stage I do not know what the weight is. The Camper is an Off Road, Cub, fold out hard floor. Tow vehicle will be either our Pajero or  Patrol.

I hope to get the camper at home within the next 2 to 3 weeks to have a good look over it before we consider buying or doing and mods.

Thanks

Daryl

depending on how heavy your trailer/van is a what you are towing it with might make a big differance, as far as i know up to 2 tonnes atm only requires overide brakes

unless it is a very heavy camper trailer over 1.5 tonnes patrols an the like handle the wieght with ease

Have had campers with override and a van with electric brakes.

I prefered the elec brakes.
