During the last two weeks of April there will be a convoy of vans heading west. Some will start in Moree & make their way to Ceduna, while others will start in Tassie , pick up Vics on way accross & all meet in Ceduna to head to perth for another Lions Club Convention.
Possibile 30 to 40 vans so any one needing accomodation between Ceduna & Perth during the last two weeks of April may need to check it out.
After the convention they will all just make their own way where ever they wish to travell.

Don't forget to call in and visit your friends on the way. I don't know where I'll be at that time, but we could meet on the road. That's travel for you. I hope it all goes well and trouble-free. Safe and happy travels.

Thanks Chris, but we are not one of the convoy, just that one of our friends is so thats how we know.
We are going up north , never know where you may bump into some one.

Not if they drive sensibly allowing space between vehicles.... its terrible when they are bunched up. Was wondering if a convoy that big might need to check in with local police before proceeding?
They may not need to, the police may stop them
If they are members here I am sure they will leave a large gap for road trains, if they don't then they are idiots
There are a lot of right selfish idiots towing caravans and I have come across some of them on the roads.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that some states have a limit on amount of vehicles allowed to travel in convoy and specific distances they must have between each one. Pretty sure Army convoys are restricted to max 6 vehicles and 3 times the length of the vehicle and trailer if towing front and rear must be clear.
Sounds like a dangerous moving road block that causes accidents from cars and trucks trying to overtake as they get more desperate from been held up.
There's NO need for every one to panic, these people held one in 08 from tassie to Darwin .They leave plenty of distance between rigs, as in 2 to 3hrs from the first departure to the last, & at least a couple of kls between them as they have strict rules that must be meet.
My friend thats going ran as tail end charlie on the 08 trip with no problems.

50 vans by 2km gap equals a 100km of vans, even that is pretty intense traffic to me, wether there is room to pass or not it would certainly cause affoc at any stop even if only a few stopped, just glad I will be no where around cheers blaze
I can't see what havoc it will cause. If 2 ks between them and you coming the other way you won't even know they are in a convoy.
I think blaze is more concerned with the traffic following the convoy, having to try to overtake every 2klms trucks and cars would get annoyed, also how do they know they are ALL 2klms apart.
OMG, what a bloody over reaction, I take it the word convoy is the week link in your chain , causing a brain snap,
I share a little info with you so it may help some with their plans, you tear it apart & turn it into a disaster before it even happens. Get over it.
Maybe you should sit on the side of a east coast hwy & count how many trucks pass through in a givern time, they dont need a permit or police permission.
Just for the record, these people are not on a social get together. they are the top rank members of the clubs accross Australia , going to a business meeting, same as many others do.
Lions clubs do a lot of work for communities , also a lot behinde the scenes that you dont see. Whats more they are volenteers that contribute their time & efort,
I hate to think what your reactions would be if you did have a disaster.

There are very few issues for anyone to overtake across the Nullarbor if they wish to, the road is straight, level and untrafficked enough that most times the overtaker wouldn't even have to slow down.

I dont suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it.
Let's perhaps look at this in a 'balanced' sort of way.
A 'convoy of caravans' as described sounds innocuous enough - but it does conjure up an image - 100+ vans even if 2km apart is quite a large group.
It was suggested that one of the respondees "sit on an east coast highway" and count the trucks etc. However, these vehicles usually sit on 100kph (or faster if they can). Caravanners usually sit around 85-95kph. Therefore there is a strong possibility the 'faster vehicles' - cars, trucks, buses etc - will find themselves 'held up' from time to time.
I do think some of the responses to the original post are a little 'reactionary'. However, not an untypical response to such a large convey.
Lions groups do much good work and I hope they have a great journey - whether they are Lions, elephants, tigers or GNs.
cheers

Where does the 100+ vans come from ???
I stated maybe 30/40 . & this is accross the Nullarbor , not the east coast. I used this as an example of numbers.
The last trip they done there was up to a three hour between the first & last departure from a camp site, that doesn't create conjestion or overtacking problems for any one on a road like the Nullarbour.
Some days its just pointless trying to help some that cant be helped.

It was a very helpful post from what I seen of it. Hope they have a ball and don't get locked up for tail gating or any such thing. I mean, this could happen with 30 vans spaced over three hours couldn't it?

I must be a binge thinker. I do it a lot at times, then, not much at all.
we have all seen those idiot drivers who think they own the road.
It's not ownership.
They're staring through the windscreen watching the country slide by, totally oblivious of the other traffic or their impact on the traffic flow in both directions.
We, the wise ones have to make allowances for them, and if they have a CB radio, give them a polite call, if it's turned on.
