Its a great idea. Never done it myself but have heard some great stories. There are a few on here who do it regularly. There's also a spot on the front page where you can find housesitting to do.
We've started house-sitting early last year and really enoy it. We're registered as sitters on three web sites; we started our new 'career' in Cowra, then spent six months in the Geraldton area on three different properties, then did several more, closer to Perth and our grandsons before leaving WA in late January.
We look for semi-rural and rural areas so we have room for our house (we stay in our own house), and have standing invitations to return at any time.
Saves us quite a bit while still giving us the advantages of caravan parks - power, water and use of laundry & toilet. We also have the fun of pets, and usually lovely fresh eggs & even vegies.
We'll be off to Junee next, then SE Queensland, then northern NSW, then...?

It's a great way to travel to different regions and towns and enjoy them while you're there. Then you move on to another place to do more of the exciting same, with the reassurrance you can return if you choose. I have done some in Broome mainly for a doctor and his wife who used to go away to work. If I run out of travelling destinations and ideas I might take it on myself. Know anyone who needs an experienced, reliable oversize pilot?

Management makes the decisions, but is not affected by the decisions it makes.
We have had several people house-sit for us, we try to choose local folk, so we can get the same ones for our next trip. We've made friends with them, one couple are English, and visit Canberra every summer to be near their daughter and grandchildren. We were so sorry they werent available last year, but made a new friend in the lady who came.
Even without pets, its peace of mind about security, mail, lawn-mowing/tidiness etc.
We always make sure we meet them, then if they arent "right", or they dont like the house we/they can cancel. Tezza had an unfortunate experience recently where he and his wife found themselves in a filthy place for 2 weeks, and couldnt leave because of the pets. Would recommend doing as much research about it as possible before committing.
