Good day to all, well i have the news now what is going on so far
we went to see the P .A Hospital in brisbane and there we saw three doctors and a nurse, one doctor was taking notes the others came in after and examined my lovely shark scar.
We were then told i am going to have to drive down to the pa every day of the week day and have what they called the whole basket thrown at me as a precaution of this melanoma returning, apparently i am at a very high risk for this returning and even if i have the radiation it still may .
So we are going to tackle this, im not so sure how i shall go driving this everyday its rediculous i found out about a few places to stay through the nurses i was given a brochure of places, one of them has the ptss scheme and so they can give you up to thirty dollars a day ,my main concern is the doctor was adamant that i shall be fine, so i spoke to the hospital themselves yesterday and they said i need to speak to the doctor
I am going to stress to him again that i dont feel good about driving to brisbane everyday and plus its a $8 trip each way through the clem 7
you do get 15 cents per kilometre for travel ,but honestly i dont even want to have to drive that much every day ,they reckon radiation knocks the hell out of you with fatigue, hubby cant take a day off every day for a month its just not possible.
so i guess when i go down on tuesday for the cat scan to have the tattoo markers put in my body i shall once again stress to him that i am not feeling great about the idea, not only that on monday there were about four car crashes on the highway each way .
Did you get my post about contacting the social welfare person at the hospital, thats who you have to talk to, and someone from the cancer society, I cant see why not in your case, that you can get a full subsidy to stay at buranda lodge or any motel that is close to the hospital. cheers
that's a huge burden on you for sure. It would be worth getting in touch with the social worker service through the cancer support team for a few other options. Given the fact that your type of radiation treatment is specifically going to cause significant fatigue it would be a justification for you to stay in subsidised accommodation. Certainly it would save you lots of stress and money so it probably the best option.
The main thing is to use all of the recommended arsenal available so you have the best shot of beating this horrible thing.
Definitely talk to the social worker and/or cancer society. But don't wait til next week, Graeme needs to get them on the phone today. I'm actually surprised they haven't contacted you already.
You shouldn't have to go through all this c**p on top of your cancer battle.
There would have to be something in place for out-of-towner patients.
I did say that the cancer society paid for everything for me at buranda lodge,, I was treated like a queen. Never paid a dime in the four and half months I was there, while howard was in Princess Alexandra, not a dime.
Glassies, do they understand that you would have to drive yourself down every day. Maybe they don't. Either way there has to be a better deal, some where for you to stay in Brisbane. Do you know of anyone in Brisbane you could stay with if they won't help as Lynette suggested. Sounds to me there must be help for you if both Lyn and Howard got it. All the best, thinking of you.
I think your best bet would be to follow animalcarer's suggestion and speak to the social welfare person at the hospital. It is always better to take advice from someone who has "been there and done that" and animalcarer sure has.
Della you can't possibly do all that driving on your own as everyone has said there must be something someone can do for you check all the avenues out take care of yourself and we are all backing you and thinking of you both. Hugs Helena.

This is great advice - when we went through this ordeal as a family there was a lot of help available there are a couple of places close to the hspital that are very heavily subsidised and are not Home but you can live there for the duration, we stayed in a couple of different ones - ask the social workers for contact. Hopefully a good friend or close reli. can be with you when Mr Glassies can't. Keep your chin up Darl, it will be done with one day and it's funny the good things that you experience and great people you will meet in unexpected places
My sentiments exactly geoff and Jan. People are really lovely and supportive . Buranda Lodge has now been bought lock stop and barrel by PA Hospital. Remember the squeaky wheel gets the oil. You have to TELL the S worker that it is imperative to have fully funded support, the cancer society has a huge amount of funds to accommodate this hun, so dont worry about that.
Thats what it is set up for. Other information that might be helpful is if you are unable to work, and have an insurance with your superannuation, you may be entitled to a pay-out. Ring your super fund to find out. Stones
corner is very near pa hospital, they have a great vege shop there.
Woolies is near PA and quite a few other shops,
Little Kings Handicappted society (part of the catholic church) run a opp shop, and craft group in carl st.
The beauty and hairdressing schools in stones corner do hair cuts for $5 and massages for $10.
have the phone number of cancer council will call tomorrow after i get the tattoos in from ct scan , as i said i asked the doc about accom and specificaly said to him i am not able to drive down every day im stressed as it is and all he said was you will be fine, thats my cancer doctor at the pa hospital ? Dr Burmeister so when i spoke to the hospital on the phone i got told oh you will have to speak to the doc about that?
so was at a loss of what to do next but i have read in the cancer booklet that they can be rung and i shall call them and state that i cannot just drive every day for five days a week to and from hospital its just too stressful, i used to donate 30 dollars a month to cancer council ,so i will stress that what is the funding for if you are not able to get some form of help when you are a vicitim yourself
will keep you posted after tomorrow thank you everybody for your advice xxxx
All the best to you Glassies. You will be best advised to latch on to Lynette privately and find out all you can about the support available out there for you. Between Lynette and the hospital social worker and cancer support network, you should be in good hands. Work it out with your husband as well, so he knows you'll be ok and he doesn't have to take time off or worry about you. He needs reassurance as well. Most blokes don't like to see their partners suffering or in trouble. Hang in there. I have no idea what you're going through, but it sounds unpleasant. The cure is worse than the disease. Stay strong and as positive as possible.

glassies, have you told your Dr at the hospital that you are stressed out, and cannot drive that many times a week for that long? IF you have to get a letter or something from him he needs to know, that is one problem with Dr's they think they ALWAYS know best and half the time they do not, especially if they do not know the situation you find yourself in, don't forget you are employing the Dr so therefore you should be telling him what you want or need.
yep wombat a dr burmeister at the hospital saw me and we both stressed to him how far i had to drive each time and he just said do you drive and i said YES and he said then whats the problem ,i said for starters ive never driven in a city in my entire life apart from driving from here to royal brisbane and back was one straight road and he said well all you have to do is come through the clem 7 ,this is true ,if i knew how to get onto the bloody clem 7 for starters, anyway we did it together today and its seems easy ,my main concern was that and that i will be either possibly fatigued ,(not a good thing driving ) or possibly nauseus ,but he just said oh youll be fine.
so if it turns out im not well enough then i shall just say no im not damn well enough and i shall tell him he had best get me some form of accom close by or i wont be continuing the program im pretty sure that will put him to work for me.
I am really surprised the doc is treating you so unkindly. Normally they have a better beside manner than that. I'm appalled. I would be saying so to him or to some other in the hospital.
Glassies, my experience with radiotheropy (my hushand's) was it didn't make him nauseus. From what he told me, he didn't feel a thing. (He always put on a tough face though)
Also he only went once a week for six weeks. But, because he was so sick, he was too tired to drive himself. Driving with the anxiety you must have would not be safe for you. There are accommodation options in place with all large hospitals. You may just have to be a very squeaky wheel. Also, what about community cars. Quite often there are volunteers available through the health car system who may drive you.
Thinking of you and I wish you all the best. Keep up the good fight.
G, have to spoken to your own GP about this problem? explain to him you are concerned and under stress, this way you will get a second opinion, don't forget to tell him what you think of Dr Burmeister
