Welcome to all newcomers too and those I may have missed previously, hope you all enjoy the forum.
Vida, I only have one of those small hand held radios from Dick Smith, range of about 3 kms, ok for in convoy or for contacting nearby trucks etc. Others here with plenty of experience and knowledge though.
My phone is an old one but a goodie, LG Next G with Telstra, wouldn't use anything else around Oz except for a Sattelite phone for remote areas.
Happy Travels,
Vic

Hi Ace Pop Top Campervan & A'Van A'Lite Camper Trailer.....
Khalil Gibran says "We tarry forward - not backward".
Spread the laughter Share the cheer Let's be happy While we're here.
I was having a peak at the amount of people to join our forum & it's increasing all the time. In the last 7 days we have had 21 new members which is great.
I noticed only 4 of you new members have posted on here so far which is ok & probably an average percentage for newbies but please don't be too shy, make that initial posting & say hello & tell us what you're towing & driving & where you come from. If you have't got started yet then tell us your dreams.
Have you got any questions about van setups or starting out then use the search button above or ask one of us, we are a font of information & surprisingly, most of us don't bite...though, I can't vouch for all.
Welcome & Cheers to all newbies.
Jon & Hylda

We have just been looking at new phones, the T54 telstra is the latest rural phone for the country areas & it has provision for an external ant if you wish to fit one to your car, I have been using external for years & yes it does make a difference. Telstra next G is the only one for the best coverage. The new UHF 80ch radios are only 1/3 the size of the old ones so installing will be easier, been running a uniden for 20 + yrs .

Hi to all, We are new newbies, we started with a 18ft Coromal 6 months ago and have just changed to a 21ft Jayco Heritage. Monday will be our first trip in the new van. Going to Pt. Hughes on the York Perninsula for 5 days. Cant wait. We are both still working at this stage and only doing weekend trips at present. Intending to retire next year and start the big trips. We are both pretty quiet and shy people so we will be totally going outside our comfort zone meeting new people etc. but looking forward to it all the same.
Our only draw back I can see at this stage is I am so going to miss our beautiful grandchildren.
Wow! Look what you've done Jon and Hylda. Well done!! Welcome to the newbies. I hope you enjoy your stay. For the new Adelaide nomads I'm happy to have a chat if you feel the need. Contact me by private message if you like. Part of the enjoyment of this lifestyle is meeting and mingling with fellow nomads. Everyone is differenct but we all have travelling in common. Don't be shy. Come and join us. You might have to bring your own chair and beverage of choice, but you'll always be welcome in my camp.

I have a Uniden 40 channel UHF about 7 years old now and still doing its job. I also have a GME 80 channel UHF which is very good quality. The larger hand-held has a broader range and better quality reception but you don't have to go to the expense of the GME. I need it for the job. A UHF radio is an asset in this exercise. I encourage everyone I can to either install one in the tug or carry a hand held, keep it on channel 40 when you're on the road to keep track of traffic and road conditions. The truck drivers welcome any questions but there's no room for long chats You only get about 3 minutes of transmission time when you're passing in opposite directions. Watch your mirrors to keep track of the traffic behind you and allow them time to overtake when it's safe. It's good if you can call the truck behind you to let him know you've seen him and call him around to overtake when it's safe. It's all about communication. The blog to keep everyone informed of your progress. The windscreen wave to tell everyone you're happy travellers. The mirrors and the UHF to communicate with fellow travellers. Isn't this fun? Safe and happy travels.

Hello to all newbies and welcome! This surely is a friendly site and lots of help/support to be found. We've only been around for two or three months and feel like old-timers
Our mobile phone purchased specially for trip around Oz last year is a cheapy
ZTE T100... bought at Telstra shop, I think paid $59 (might be $49?). Main benefit is to connect via USB to our computer. With software programme called "Join Me" the phone becomes a modem allowing internet connection wherever 3G is available. It also has connection point for external antenna to help where reception is poor but available. I bought antenna with magnetic base for about $70-80. This little unit has worked very well all around.
I just got a Telstra mobile plan called Freedom 49, $49/month includes $500 calls and 1.5 GB data and free SMS.. should work well for us.

Welcome to the forum - it is good to have "new faces".
There is a spelling checker when you write posts - it is up on the top right hand side (tick with ABC over it); however it wouldn't pick up your spelling of cheque instead of check because it is a real word. Maybe a grammar checker but I think that is a bit extreme. You will need to a little less annoyed with incorrect spelling and grammar - that's life.

To all who have been turrned off Pomona Showgrounds & Caravan Park, I have just been there, and found it a great place. Can not fault the caretakers, and they are so helpful. Yes, they have some people living in tents. But, these people are trying to help themselves, instead of Charity having to stretch their budget. So, I would find it false to say "NEVER GO THERE"
Hi and welcome to all our new members - whats so great is that we never stop learning so all those questions help everyone else too I open a page in word and type things I'm not sure of it tells me if it's correct or not

I'll take any sort of cheque as long as it's payable to me.
