That's very good.....I get out there and enjoy it now...and DO NOT care about fuel consumption. I just fill the Cruiser up every 400+ km's and don't worry about it. That way I never have to have any concerns about getting the dregs off the bottom of the tank
Counting dollars and fuel consumption in this lifestyle is a bit counter-productive. Are you there for the look and experience, or to play Scrooge, counting every litre and dollar? So when does the fun begin? Spend carefully and wisely and you have a great time without busting the bank. Make sure you budget for some of the tourist stuff and special sightseeing ventures. No point in driving flat out everywhere. I reckon your numbers are very good. Good for you! If you use that consumption as a reference you'll do ok.

I gave up looking at figures long ago, doesn't hurt as much that way. Its either that or stay at home, no thanks.
The picking up dregs is a myth, yes dregs are mostly in the bottom of the tank & the pickup has a mesh strainer , gause or plastic around around it and is located almost on the bottom of the tank, so whether full , half or where ever the pickup does not change.

Rocklizard. thanks for yr reply. i've only posted 4 or 5 posts probably mostly silly questions, but being new to this life style i needed to ask. a couple of times i have felt that some responses have been a bit wrong, i only asked peoples opinion on my fuel ecomony, not to be called a scrooge or a tight a##e. maybe its the generation gap (me being 48) but i feel that some people out there really need to get over there negitivness and maybe step down a rung or two. we are all equal on this big chunk of land that we call home. i really thought that people on this forum would show more respect and kindness. maybe i'll just have to find another one to get info from and leave this one to the people who maybe think they are just to good for some.
Steve.... I for one did say that your figures were VERY GOOD. Please re read my reply.
I just added that I don't worry about fuel consumption any more as it ends up consuming me. I don't really think I showed you any disrespect. If you think I did, I apologize.
Please people, don't read too much into WORDS...as reveryone reads something different. Enjoy life !!!

Gday...
Unfortunately, I think the recent flurry of 'ill-feeling' on this forum has temporarily influenced forumites.
Usually, you would have had a flurry of informative responses nominating their fuel consumtion figures, perhaps asking some clarification questions seeking more information of your circumstances, and generally discussing the topic.
Keep asking questions, the forum will return to its old self.
cheers
John

John,
People are only giving their opinions mate. Which they are entitled to do.

I can't see any flurry of "ill-feeling"
Enjoy it mate and don't worry too much
Gday...
I guess I worded my post poorly. The comment regarding "ill-feeling" was alluding to the atmosphere on the forum generally over recent weeks (months?) and definitely not to this thread at all.
I was just attempting to advise a new member that the reticence of posters, in comparision to a few momths ago, will pass as the forum regains its 'old self'.
Happy travelling
Cheers
John

im not refering to individuals, just the forum in general. dunco i did read yr reply and really do appreciate yr response. i don't like being called a scrooge just because i wanted to no if my fuel ecomony was any good. maybe there is a "class" difference. i need to try saving so we can do this for as long as possible maybe the scrooge comments came from people who are (or think they are) a class above the rest. we are just 2 normal people trying to get away from the rat race and enjoy life and love for each other and our country. it seems that most posts lead to some sort of disagreement or another, here to enjoy, not to be called names
Steve & Maria, I fully understand what your saying, I have only been on here a while and took me a while to get used to how people make comments on here, I dont think any of them mean any disrespect its just the way people talk. I tend to take it all with a grain of salt and pick out the posts I want to read. I dont have a L/cruiser any more but your economy sounds pretty good to me for towing a large van. I found with mine if you sit around the 90kph it returned much better than trying to make the 100. Ignore what annoys you and enjoy the travelling lifestyle.
Maybe you did not get the response you expected becuase not many members have the same Cruiser as you have.
I certainly do not, I/we did have a Prado 3 ltr turbo diesel and was very dissappointed in the fuel figures. Average 17.5 l/100 towing a van that weighed 2200kg.
Not much better towing the new lighter van 1700kg.
We then went to a Falcon XR6Turbo and achieved the same fuel consumption figures.
We now have a Mercedes Benz ML270 and achieved towing figures of 13.5l/100
Therfore I would suggest your fuel consumption is very good.
Hang in there, this is a very friendly forum, please give it time.

Hi steve
in no way were my comments meant to be negitive, its a fact of vehicle ownership that your fuel will be one of your lesser expenses, depreciation one of the greater. I am only 51 myself so te age factor doesnt come into it but have been on te road now for about 15 months
I was being cheeky and trying to encourage you to relax, kick back, pull up to the bowser when necessary, and travel on. However, now I have a less cheeky response. I did my consumption figures on day 1 out of Broome to Hedland. It's a long, reasonably flat haul with a consistent speed and easy drive, and if anything the wind was from the west, north west. I got about 8 kms to the litre. I'm not sure how to turn that around to litres/100 kms. Is it about 12.5 litres per hundred? Just for info, when I did the count after an escort job I got 6 kms to the litre including a savage head wind. The sign on the roof presents a hell of wind resistance and at times I couldn't even get out of 4th gear. You should've seen the fuel needle drop, and I was looking for a pump again. It sounds as though you are well set up and all ready to get on with it. I do apologise if my previous response offended, but I can assure you it was really my effort to encourage you to "chillax" and enjoy the country as it slides by. Safe and happy travels to you.

I tow a heavy van with my V8 diesel tojo and I am always pretty much cruising around the 85-90 give or take a few and sometimes i wind her up a little on the lead up to a hill. Depending on which types of roads I am traversing I have been constantly returning readings around the 17-20 litres per 100km. I would get the 17 on the highways and up to around 20 litres off road and or in hilly mountain terrains.
I don't really care about fuel consumption.......but I always do the sums - GO FIGURE LOL !
It is a good idea to understand what your consumption is, as there are a lot of roads particularly in the north of this country where it is a long way between petrol stations. If you don't have a good understanding of how far you can get with the fuel you have in the tank, you run the risk of not getting to the next place to fill up, or of having to fill up at somewhere like Aileron Roadhouse (which had the dearest fuel up the centre when we went up in 2009).
18 litres per 100km sounds similar to what we get with our Patrol. The most impact on this figure is wind, it has got above 20 litres pulling into a headwind across the Barkly tableland, and if anything side winds have even more affect than headwinds.
Just got back from Hall Gap via Melb towing a 2500kg champion caravan with a 2006 t/d prado and got 17.79l/100klm on the way up and 16.94l/100klm on the way back ( with a new nose cone ) My trip around the centre and down the west coast last year (22000klm) i averaged 16.5l/100klms but with a 2350 kg concept van This is a good forum and please hang in there Ken
