Hi all, my name is Mandy and I am new to this forum. In 5 weeks time my husband and I plus one small dog are planning to travel to Cape York and out to south western Queensland. We will be travelling approx. 10,000 klms over 4-5 months. We have a tent and 4x4. If anyone as any suggestions or places that we just have to see on our travels we would love to hear from you.
Hi Mandy, great to have you on board. lots of people here to help with everything about travelling in australia. If you are going near the gold coast - the hinterland would be magnificant after all this rain. purling brook falls, natural arch. there is a cheap camp near purling brook falls and you can camp at sharpe park (not sure if it is Shark park or sharpe park) and then theres binna burra, o'reillys tree top walk, mt. tamborine. heaps and heaps to see and do in these forests.
Hi and welcome Mandy and co. I hope you have safe and happy travels. If you're going through the central west check out Carnarvon Gorge, camp a couple of days and do a walk into the heart of the gorge. Don't get caught in there if it rains. I also enjoyed Richmond in dinosaur country around Hughenden to Julia Creek. There's Cobold Gorge out from Forsyth and surrounding areas. So much to do, so little time. Have fun with it.

We are leaving from near Nanango in Qld. Planing to go to Inskip Point first followed by Boynedale, Emerald, Theresa Dam, Bundoora Dam, Stanage Bay Carmilla Beach, Airlie Beach, Townsville, Bramston Beach, then start our way up to Cape York, come back down through the Gulf and out to far western Qld. Like I said we are planning on taking between 4-5 months all going well.
It's several years since I went to the Cape, but I loved the drive through the Daintree. Some of my favourite places were Portland Roads, Chili Beach, Seisia.
Atherton Tablelands are magic, but they may be off your route.
Undarra Lava Tubes are amazing, but google first or phone them as you have to book in. It's well worth the money though.
Also Lark Quarry, out of Winton.
There's a good camp on the Barcoo River at Blackall. $5 for the use of the shower, to be paid to the info centre.
Do you have the bible? Camps Australia Wide. It lists free and low cost camps.

We loved Undarra Lava Tubes too always wanted to see paranella park too
Enjoy your stay at Inskip it's a great place to start Go in at Natone for beautiful spots with beach view and privacy, toilets no water love that spot.
Thanks for the invite. We will still be somewhere around Gympie. Probably at Boynedale Bush Camp. What is happening at Gympie on the 14th an where will you all be staying.
if you go to the tip you may as well go out to the islands, the ferries run twice a day in the tourist season. horn island has a really good war museum, as with T.I., stay the night, visit friday island pearl farm as well. we worked on T.I. for quiet a time while traveling in qld. good fishing as well. the roads may still be wet going up to the cape at the moment. you can go up the good road and down the telegraph track, then cut across to weipa. we put our car on the working boat trinity bay, worth a trip then only drove down the track. you have to drive through what they call gun shot (i think its called that. memory loss). it a challenge at times. Burketown is worth a visit, home of the morning glory, also Kurumba. if you are going right out east, dont forget the Birdsville races are on, in the first week of sept.
Welcome Mandy and Wayne, you will gain so much info from this site and find the folks very friendly.
Agree with Beth regarding Portland Roads, Chilli Beach, Atherton Tablelands
Other magic spots are Lawn Hill National Park and free camping along the Gregory River at Gregory Downs.
cheers
Glenda
welcome mandy and wayne ,yep all them places are great i went straight past the lawn hill sign ,didnt get to see it sadly as i would of loved to, but weipa is one of my most favourite places shoot out to mapoon they now have turtle nesting from what ive heard.
also top end is amazing place, lots to see on the way ,cooktown is one of the most gorgeous places so much like New Zealand too, the lions den hotel is fantastic, also cairns is nice to take a look at as well, im not a city person but cairns is a nice place i reckon, get the free camp book from newsagents camps book 6 is out now from what ive heard.
enjoy your travels ,one word of advise in the gulf country or even up north get out of the way of trucks they dont slow down and they dont move for you, pull over if you have to get right off the road especially if its a dirt road you will wear the rocks on your windscreen if you dont pull off far enough ,as they come through like bulldust ,but thats mostly if you decide to do the gulf part of Australia.
Thank you everyone for your warm welcome. If we are near Gympie in May we would love to come along to you get together. We plan on staying up the cape for a few weeks to be able to have a good look around. Mapoon is one of the places we plan on staying, I believe the fishing is great around Cullen Point. If this rain keeps up we will be swimming up there. Has anyone gone to a place called Stanage Bay its on the coast from Marlborough. We have heard conflicting reports about it.

I've only been to St Lawrence in that area. Good free camp. Hot showers & toilets.
