Do not overtake.

Getting ready for our trip.

Less than eight weeks to go.9not counting or anything)

Fitted a "Do not overtake turning vehicle" sign on the rear of the caravan today.

Never worried about it before, always considered it a large semi/truck sign, but the extra turning space it allows one to use when turning into servo's, sharp left hand intersections, etc. could be a very good thing.

Bet ya , most of th d h's don't read em .

Unless some of em have started to take notice of em .

Or is it just th vehicles I have been driving since they bought those signs

in , mid to late 70s I believe .

Still bet there will be 'yokels' that don't take any notice of your sign .

They come in a variety of sizes. I have the large stick on version. There's the number place size you screw on, or the larger version for the trucks.
Use what fits. Apparently there's a regulation about height above ground, the side it should be put etc. Put it in an obvious place to cover your tail.

 A minimum of 7.5metres long.

That is a total length, in our case - vehicle 5.2metres + caravan 6.4metres = 11.6metres.

If on a motorhome, it would have to be longer than 7.5metres.

I gather that if you had a motor home shorter than 7.5 metres towing a vehicle on an A frame, you could hang a sign on the rear of the towed vehicle. You would have to remove the sign, when not being towed.

Google "Do not overtake turning vehicle" and you will get the government regulations on sign type, sign size and where to fit.

As Richo says, there will still be idiots that will try and cut under you, but if anything goes wrong, your insurance company will love you.

Remember the worded sighn must be fitted to the left side only & is only applicable to left turns.

That depends on what state you're in JC.
I have mine on the right rear of the van because there's no room on the left because there's a window.
It can actually apply to a right turning vehicle if there's a traffic island and lights on the turn and you need to make room to swing right without taking out the lights or hit the kerb of the island. It works for semis and b-doubles and road trains.
It actually applies either way.
We use a similar principle for overwidth.
I wouldn't want to be on the inside to the right of a right turning big thing.

Sounds like the same old problem chris, cant get two states to agree on same rules. My quote was from the rta nsw about six mths back.

I got mine at a caravan shop. Neither Supercheap nor Repco had them.

Mine is just a decal that runs across the back above the spare tyre, note that the photo in my avatar was taken before it was fitted.

A friend of ours who is a known leadfoot was behind a semi turning left and when the truck pulled into the right lane to make the turn she ignored the left blinkers and gunned it on the inside lane. She is still in hospital and lucky to be alive and the car is now a convertible and written off.no.gif She proved the previous comment that some people don't look at the don't overtake  sign confuse.gif

Thanks for the info Jeff.......but what the hell is a safety shop? Do you mean like, Supercheap Auto or Repco or something like that?

Ive never seen these signs in shops.......maybe I should lift a set of a parked caravan

Almost any van with its tug would be 7.5 meters, so we were surprised that the dealer didnt stock them, nor did they know where to get one. As we understand it, its a legal requirement if your rig needs more than one lane to turn.

Workplace safety equipment shops have them and other useful equipment you may need.
Just because we display this advice doesn't mean the motorists see them, or even know what it actually means.
I really think there are a few issues the Road Transport Authorities need to hold education campaigns on the media, but as you say JC, each state has it's own rules. I really don't think it's a hanging offence to display the sign on the wrong side of the vehicle. The phrase is, "Do Not Overtake Turning Vehicle". No reference to right or left turn.
No wonder the transport industry is so confused.
