Need help with coffee in the van

G'day everyone,

I had exactly the same dilemma and I was advised to have alook at a "atomic coffee maker" works on any stove top (gas/elect) and makes a very nice cappy or latte'.

you can look them up at www.atomiccoffeemachine.com.au and there are several youtube videos on how to use them and how well hey work

I love it and it lives in the van

good too for when we have a blackout and I need a coffee.

Call me a coffee neanderthal ... but .... We use Moccona Indulgence INSTANT at home & on the road.

I do it as short black every evening .. double coffee & double sugar substitute, in a short cup. Excellent; as good an espresso that I have had. Top it off with a Dutch triple salt licorice ... fantastic flavours!

If you want to tart up any coffee, add a couple of cardamon seeds.

I'm not a coffee drinker but that is one great device, Venus. I wonder if it would do a Chai Latte??

Hi everyone, just got back from a week at Wallaga Lake on the south coast, great weather, the lake was just perfect for the kayaks...our only problem was coffee. We have a fabulous coffee maker at home (flat white for him, cappucino for her) but we need something for the van...haven't got room for the fabulous coffee maker, can't stand instant coffee and have tried using a large plunger for the coffee grinds and a smaller plunger for frothing the heated milk....can be complicated and a little (ok well a lot) messy when someone who shall remain nameless goes into full production in the van. Has anyone had any experience with the capsule type coffee maker I've seen advertised by Aldi or any other suggestions. cheers Venus

I can never understand the obsession with coffee, and I'm certainly no coffee connoisseur. Maybe you can explain it to me.
I drink International Roast instant, but I'd rather drink water.
If you want the coffee you have to work out how to get the coffee.
I would have thought the plunger would have been the next best thing, using boiled milk if you have to have the froth and bubbles.

G'day Doug,

mate if you have the time take a look at some of the you tube videos on this machine.

I think you could make just about any kind of hot drink with it. I know it makes great hot choccy with frothy milk. My youngest granddaughter told me it was great stuff.

Hi Venus I have a nespresso machine that my son gave to me when he went to live overseas, makes lovely coffe and the frother works very well but the capsules are rather expensive and its probably still quite large to carry in a van, the one that Aldi have is quite inexpensive as are their capsules but not sure how well it works and don't think it has a milk frother attached. My daughter has the smallest DeLonghi Nespresso machine and its a little smaller than mine so that might be one to consider, you can order the capsules on line but if yr moving around getting them delivered may be a problem, most large Myer and David Jones stores stock the capsules and I'm prity sure that Harvey Norman may too.

Another vote for a Nesspresso and milk frother, takes up no room and great coffee, short black for her macchiato for me.
Works out at 68c per cup, come on guys, life's too short to drink bad coffee
You know, all the time we travelled around we had a full piece of "non slip" on the front bench top, never moved anything whilst traveling. We had a Global knife block, electric kettle and base, the coffee machine, a fruit bowl and electric toaster. Never had any misshaps. We also put non slip on the exposed shelves witch held cups glasses etc.
Grab your coffee machine and leave it where it is.

I recently called in to my computer specialist and I timed it well as it was their morning coffee time. They offered me a cuppa made with one of those Aldi gizmos and it was very nice.

I have the Aldi one and love it but then I don't have a problem with power. I don't think it uses that much power anyway but there is nothing like a good coffee.

I also tend to like a bit of cream instead of milk as I have an alergy to milk for some reason.

I also have a BCF coffee boiler that I use when camped and a fire going. It sits there all day ready to go. I grind my own beans as well.

We have a Nespresso machine which has the frother built in. We have taken it away in the van and it is lovely and compact. The pods cost about 70 cents each and can be ordered on the internet to be sent anywhere.

It's a real delight sitting under the awning sipping a latte and watching the world go by.

I am not a big coffee drinker but because the pods come in different strengths, I have a mild blend while M.O.T.H. has a stronger one.

Also got some Hazelnut syrup from Gloria Jeans.

That's what I was talking about a bit down the page Smokey.. We notice your illustration doesn't include the strong cappuccino; prob'ly because it's the one most difficult to find in stores!

Another one hard to find at times is Moccona Indulgence, eh Cupie? That's our usual drop after dinner each evening.

FWIW we generally add a little pinch of salt to each cup .. our guests usually appreciate that!

We buy multiples of those two styles whenever they're on special; sometimes not on special but we grab some anyway while they're on the shelf.

I have and Aldi Expressi Coffee machine at home very compact $79 and $5.99 for 16 pods .....9 strengths....there is a frother jug $20 also................very clean and easy to use

Happy Easter Wombat,

When I bought mine 12 months ago the RRP was around $495.00. I was offered a "seconds" that had some tooling marks on one surface for $450. The marks are minor and of no concern to me.

You can send them an email and they will reply quite promptly with a price.

I found their service to be excellent.

we had a slight problem with the handle on ours aldi refunded no probs made very good cofee and cheap enough

I'm with you my esspresso stove top maker still tastes the best even though I have a lovely coffee machine in the house I still love the flavour from the brew on the stove.

That looks amazing Wombat, much fancier than mine. all of the stove top ones make great coffee you just get the whole bean flavour from them.

Another vote for Nespresso. We have had the smallest machine for 4 years now and won't go away in the van without it. We had an Italian coffee machine at home (at great expense) and ended up ditching it in favour of the Nespresso, mainly on the grounds of cleaning and time taken to get a cup. The coffee is just as good without the work, the mess or the wait. If you buy premium coffee and grind it yourself, the cost of a Nespresso pod is about the same at 67c.

I can produce two cups of flat white from scratch in an ad break on TV.

Showed this thread to SWMBO and by coincidence, a relative used an Aldi type to make coffee at lunch yesterday. Then today's junk mail advertised them at $79.

I was dispatched to Aldi to get one immediately.

No milk frothers at any of the four local outlets. I am instructed to keep a lookout for one.

I also have an ancient Pyrex one that Mother had many years ago. It is heated by placing it on a mat on any stovetop. The bottom section doubles as a coffee pot to serve coffee at the table. I think that there is a glass bubbler separating the top & bottom sections.

Must pull it out of the cabinet & check it out.

i too buy the sachets of cappachino not the sweet ones though and i also cut them
in half and we share one, as i find them way too sweet for me, even though ihave a sweet
tooth,i add milk too even though you dont need milk but they are the closest thing to a nice
cappachino that i have come across without getting fancy camping lol :)
