It's your choice what you take with you,I agree with your choice and I also hate plastic cutlery.Give me a decent knife and fork and a decent plate too.

Just place some of that rubbery non slip matting under and between each plate. You can get in in a roll from the large department stores but get the good stuff not the cheapy stuff from the cheapy shops.

Have done that Doug and am only taking 2 proper dinner plates the rest don't matter, how on earth are we supposed to condense 34 years of stuff into a van............I know I am going crazy.LOL

We first bought a "square" plate setting to better fit in the o/h cupboards. We sold our Corelle set at the garage sale. When we were 6 months in we chucked out the square set, in the camp laundry, then went and bought a new Corelle set again. Much lighter and took up half the space. Isn't it marvelous the way experience changes things. Like Doug, we put good quality non slip through out the van cupboards. We got a big sheet to do across the front bench, cut out round stove top, we NEVER shifted things like the coffee machine, knife block, fruit bowl etc. The only two things we put away were the TV on the bed face down, and the port cask had it's own spot in the sink.

Garage sales suck, I don't like people going through my junk I mean my highly prized possesions but I got rid of some stuff and the rest will go to op shop.......great idea Fae, would never have thought of that.........agree you would not want to lose the port cask that would be a real disaster.

Agree with you Pauline. I couldn't do a garage sale either. Didn't want strangers pawing over my personal stuff. What didn't sell by word of mouth, went to the op shops.
The only thing about good dinner plates is the weight. 2 won't make any difference as long as the rest is the Corelle type. Definetely proper cutlery, only have a couple of plastic teaspoons for stirring.

Isn't Corelle real crockery? Well, I'm disillusioned.
I proudly serve my food on my Corelle dinnerware with my recycled stainless steel cutlery which I salvaged from a box of useful stuff someone gave me in Broome when I set up in my first van.
It's all about weight and space.
Paper or plastic plates are for picnics and bbq's, as are plastic cutlery.
A moving caravan is no place for Royal Doultin crockery.
I think I do it somewhere between "glamping" and camping, even though I live in the van full time.

Mines not Corelle CG. Looks like it but bought from a cheap shop. Does just as well. My cutlery I bought from an op shop. 2 of everything.

I must be very lucky as we havn't broken a thing in 6 years, if we couldn't bring stuff with us it had to go as this is home and don't have anywhere to store anything so i'm still using my willow dinnerware i have been using for the last 20 years now having said that i will probably break something. I have it on a tiered plate rack with soup bowls and other stuff around it, i just shove a pillow in that cupboard when we move on and alls good.

Our plate racks in the top cupboards have a 4 piece setting of Corelle. Glasses & porcelain coffee mugs reside in those looped glass holders sold in most caravan stores.

Don't like plastic stuff.

Decant wine into good label bottles to show off at happy hour & to meter the quantity consumed.

Way to go!

Yep! Corelles the go. They even sell trendy square sets of corelle nowadays if you hanker for a bit of glam. Ours are plain white... wish they made glasses though. Not even proper corelle mugs these days.

You are so right about Op shops Brian! And its a way to support the local charities in the towns we visit.

My port keg has it own little section in the cupboard. Have to keep it save as after standing for a few years dont want to waste it.

Only problem is I now have two larger kegs working in friends houses so I can top up.

My friends are very good in that they continue to check the quality for me to make sure it does not go off LOL.

Always decanter into a bottle as it seems to go quick and don't want anyone know there is more for the taking. I use a cheap bottle so the goodies wont take any as it is below their standing.

I don't care what other people think. I use what ever I have and if I break something I go to the special shops for nomads.

Some call them OP shops but they are there for us nomads to drop the last seasons clothes off and get the latest weather set.

Also good for little knick knacks etc as well as good for books etc.

Take 2 good crockery plates and 1 or 2 correlle plates & seperate the breakable ones with the unbreakable ones for protection when travelling.

The extra plates come in handy for visitors or putting that silverside on after you have just cooked it.

Worked for us.

Hi Pauline when I started my trip last year I took all plastic except for cutlery which was stainless steel, after the first week I chucked the plastic and bought proper plates mugs and bowls, and a glass wine glass

which I'll replace for my next trip with a pewter one. The weight was minimul compared to the amount of clothes and shoes I took lol 90% of which I never wore !!!!
When do you leave?

Its not fair! You spend years getting all these valued odds and bods, and then you have to part with them when you go on the road.I have 35 years of goodies , and will be sad to get rid off most of them. But, I suppose, you can only take so much............

Hey Gilly, Nev takes the van up to Beachmere in about an hour and I go up on Wednesday after final inspection on unit, we will be there for about 5-6 weeks, Nev has work there then off to Mackay 1st of June for a start there...........then who knows where.

Do what you think is best for you. We have had Corelle for 12+ years in the caravan and is still serving us well. We have broken two cups, however, it was't during travelling in the van. It was from being knocked of the table outside. The no slip plastic stuff is all you need. Stainless Steel KFS id the only way to go.

Pack everything firm and tight on non-slip matting.
I got my training while working on the prawn trawlers and the Murray River Queen. Except in those days we had to use wet tea towels to stop stuff sliding all over the place.
I have a plate stacker in the cupboard for the plates, and I don't need padding between each plate because they're packed too tight to move and scratch each other.
You don't have to stuff linen into the cupboards when you travel if you pack it firm.
