Arrived at Monkey Mia

Setting off early to get to Denham around 150kms in good time to make a booking at one of the 4 campsites at Shark Bay where you can stay one night free, we looked at the sites and decided that Eagle Bluff was the pick with its sandy beach and easy access. Before arriving in Denham we looked at Shelley Beach where in early days bricks were cut from the compressed shells with saws. We moved on to Denham and visited the Tourist Information Centre, the assistant was very helpful and suggested that if we were going to Monkey Mia the dolphins were fed at 7.45am and we would be better off to stay overnight actually at the resort. She also said that if we called in to the centre tomorrow we can book for that night at Eagle Bluff. The price was $15 per head for an none powered site at Monkey Mia Resort and they could just fit us if if we went straight there, pleased that we did it is really good here for $15, there are all the facilities, a pool, restaurant, laundry, shops and internet if you paid to use theirs (Telstra obviously). I backed up to the grassy oval whilst Steven pitched his tent on the grass. Went across to the beach for a swim on the beautiful sandy beach and luxuriated under a hot shower, this is definitely luxury for $15 per night. Up early for the dolphin feeding and photo opportunity then across to the internet shop with my laptop hopefully to upload the last two days, their internet wasn't working properly so I missed out posting from Monkey Mia. Then off to see a couple of places that Steven has found on the brochures but more on that later.

Its all go here as you can understand but somebody has to do it so it might just as well be me.      LOL.   John

Loved Monkey Mia, John - and Denham is a nice little place - did you check out the wharf? Crayfish?

Missed that Jules,

Leaving Monkey Mia we went to the thermal springs at Francois Peron National Park and soaked up the benefits, the water was 40 degrees so it took a bit of adjusting to. We went round the Pepper Trail an historic trip into the hard times that were common then.
Off to see the Small Lagoon, quite scenic but the shells on the beach put me off bathing there, need tougher feet than mine to walk on them. Back to Denham where we booked in for the night at Eagle Bluff camp site and had lunch on the sandy beach and swam in Shark Bay, couldnt see any fortunately. Tried to get the internet at Denham even went and parked under the transition tower, got a weak signal which kept dropping out and no good for posting and uploading.
Returned to Eagle Bluff (Camps6 #455) and this time took a more adventurous track and found an excellent spot higher than before and am posting from there.

There's a hot thermal pool at Nanga Bay as well.
It's all good. Have a good time.

When we were at Monkey Mia we went out on the boat and saw the Dugons, (Sea Cows) very graceful mammals quite fascinating to watch.

Looking forward to your next instalment.

When I was in Monkey Mia I just missed out on the boat to see the sea cows. The cutoff was the person in front of me.

So if dugongs are called sea cows, what marine animal is known as a sea camel? Could it be a hump back whale?

Hi John
I must be following you around - was at Denham on 23rd. Stayed at Hamelin Pool Station - wonderful new clean facilities but no powered sites - not a problem with big kitchen, BBQ area etc.and all for $15
Am at Coral bay for 3 days now, on to Exmouth, then fishing south of Port Headland for a couple of weeks from 12th. I see you were trying to plan a trip east from Broome - I am heading that way after the fishing. Plan to be in Mackay towards the end of June. Would be great to meet some other nomads.
