Greetings from Tin Can Bay

I'm up here at my sisters, packing/sorting Lulu in readiness for Cobb & Co Campground.

Bil has gone to Bundy to pick up his Mum, so we're having some sister time as well.

They have very kindly offered me an almost new mattress for her, so yesterday we managed to get the old one out....with a lot of greunting and 'oofing'...then woman handled the new one out of the 'palace'...their granny flat...into the Lulu. Only to find my double bed isn't a regular doulbe size after all! The mattress was too wide. So we again woman handled it out and back into the 'palace'. So we then had to get the old one in again. Phew!

Then overnight we both came up with the idea to unpick the seam of the mattress cover, cut the foam to the correct size, and hand sew it back up! It's all in our heads so far, we haven't actually done it yet.

Today we've been to the local Mitre10, a caravan supply place, a cheapy shop, and the supermarket. I've also added 2 bottles of Milton to the water tank, which I will flush and refill tomorrow. Phew again!

I have to head home on Saturday for various reasons, so need to get everything finished tomorrow.

When Bil returns from Bundy later today, I have many questions for him. 'Show me how to...' etc.  wink

Beth, If there is a Clark Rubber nearby you can take the foam mattress to them with the measurements and they will cut it for you, they charge a small fee. But it will be a lot easier and then you only have to resew up the covering.

No Clark Rubber, not even in Gympie. There's minimal shops here at all. Just the very basics. The caravan shop only opened recently. Lee said it's been a big help to him with his various projects.

It's not hard to cut it with a knife. Daughter and I did it on Gypsys mattress, no problems. The sewing up again is time consuming though.

Beth The best thing to cut foam with is an electric knife if you have one.
Just like a hot knife through butter.

I just used a normal knife last time with success, but thanks anyway. No electric knife here at my sisters place.

And welcome to the site. I see you're in SEQ too.

Welcome Beatle. Sounds like you are made of 'tough stuff' Beth - you stick at something! I'm sure it will all turn out OK. We had innerspring mattresses made for our van to replace the foam - just forgot to allow for the binding on the edges taking up extra space! They fit too snugly and are hard to make. But they are very comfortable. They weren't too dear either.

I've also bought a mattress topper, the so-called egg crate overlay. I've slept on these before and find they improve a foam mattress quite a bit. It was cheaper to go that way than to buy an inner spring.

I'm very eager for my first 'trip', even though Cobb & Co is only an hour from here. It'll be good experience for my future travels towing a caravan instead of the little camper trailer.
