RE: Mobile Internet

Hi Pete, please tell me where I can get 15GB for $15 dollars.

Sorry, I goofed that one. It's actually $100/month. Sorry to get you all excited and then let you down. I have been back in and edited it. If you have two complying services with Telstra it comes back to $80/month (I'm using rounded figures.)

What plan are you on or is it a prepaid deal? My experience is over a year prepaid is more expensive for more than very light use. Once you are on over 1 GB/month then a monthly plan is the way to go. Go to http://go.bigpond.com/wireless/?ref=Net-Head-Int-Plans-Wireless and you will see BigPond's offerings. The prices are the discounted ones when you have 2 complying services, otherwise add $20 if you don't have them. If you sign up for a 2 year deal you get the wireless modem/dongle thrown in free.

You said you are with Telstra. You have to go to the BigPond marketing arm to get the better values. The Telstra deals are fine if you want a GB or two once or twice a month. For continuous operation see BigPond.

Thank you CG - is that $150 a month or a year?

That's $150 per year for the 10 GB for 12 months.

I currently have a 1 GB per month post paid for $40 per month.  Then if I go beyond it slows down but I don't pay any extra.

There are several internet Provider services that use Telstra as their service carrier.

Big Pond is probably the first of them. Right from the beginning it imitates Telstra by logo - and very high prices - as when you run out of data, additional data costs a real fortune.

The newest one is an excellent service: http://boost.com.au/ Best ask for it at any Post Office, and they explain how to get it. At this service, for A$ 40.00/month you get unlimited telephone calls to anywhere in Australia - mobile and home - and 3 Gb of data, plus additional 2 Gb (gigabites) of data each weekend. The additional data must be used over the weekend as it do not get transferred to later. Anyway, this makes it still a very good deal. This is a service that left Optus as Telstra purchased controlling shares in it. It uses Telstra network, but it is separate from it and uses separate links on Internet, although under Telstra name, too... This service provides standard 3 Gigabites over a month for every days uses, plus 2 Gigabites of Internet data, over each weekend - which is 8 Gb over a month. All up this equals to 11 Gb of data per month.

This is usually good enough to download an occasional movie or two, and also be able to go on Facebook- which is very data hungry, or Skype, with equal appetite for data. I use it now a bit more than one year, and I'm a lot happier than when I used a Big Pond. It is a lot cheaper, and provides a lot more data, besides having been just as good as Telstra and Bigpond together as far as coverage and signal strength are concerned.

Optus offers now unlimited calls and 7Gb of data for 50/month. With somewhat more limited coverage than Telstra, but this gets all the time better now.
