Apparent Closure of Mudgee Showgrounds to Camping.

For those of you who haven't seen me on this site for a while, as I've said previously, it's only because I don't normally log in unless I have something to say.   Mostly I appear only as a guest when I am keeping up with developments and reading others' posts which I do pretty often.    We have just returned to Qld. after a 3 week trip down south.   On the 10th of  May we camped at Gulgong Showgrounds in NSW and spoke to a couple of people who told us that they had been camping at Mudgee Showgrounds (Camps 6 ref. 425), until the previous day.    They had been asked to leave as the showgrounds were no longer to be used by the travelling public for camping.   They said that it had been suggested that they try Gulgong Showgrounds if that was the type of site they wanted.   I have not contacted the relevant shire council to confirm what they told us but have no reason to doubt them.    The lady also said she had advised the Campervan & Motorhome Club of which she is a member.    If anyone has planned to stay there overnight at the end of a long driving leg on a trip it may help to check this out first along the way to avoid disappointment and inconvenience.

We tried to find the entrance to Gulgong showground and ended up at the CP which was quite dear. Pity about Mudgee.

The entrance to Gulgong is at the end of a road about 1/2 kilom. long where you arrive at what appears to be a locked gate until you look closely.   It has a chain on it but it is probably just closed to keep the wandering sheep in there. There is also a small sign on there with a phone number to contact the caretaker who visits a couple of times a day to collect fees.   You just let yourself in and pick a site, closing the gate again of course.   We thought at first that was not the way in, as you may have if you had seen it but not investigated as much.    It was quite a good spot with reasonable cost if you need a night with power and amenities although basic.
