Does anyone please know of a good caravan park with cabins near Ellalong NSW up to an hour away towards the coast??

There are a couple of parks at Cessnock, but if you want closer to the coast look at Lake Macquarie area or Central Coast. (about 45 mins from Ellalong.

Stockton would be an hour from Ellalong. Very nice clean park right on the water - and a ferry across to Newcastle main CBD - that's not very exciting but hte walk along the Foreshore is nice.

probably good idea to get the c/van booklet ,or if you
are a member of nrma they have free maps and books .

The Caravan Park at Stockton is in a lovely spot, haven't stayed there though. It doesn't take dogs unfortunately.

You're quite right, Newcastle downtown is not very interesting as all the shopping has moved out to the suburbs. The City council is accelerating this process and discouraging visitors with their rip-off parking meter fees, they'll deny this but the evidence speaks for itself.

Avoid the west end of Hunter Street at night, it's yobbosville on steroids.

That said, there are nice restaurants along the foreshore and Newcastle's beaches are equal to any. There's much to see and do in areas surrounding Newcastle and contrary to the opinions of those who never go there the greater city and nearby Lake Macquarie make up a very nice living environment.

Agree with you Jim, Newcastle is a very beautiful place, and would be much better with another council running it (but lets not deal with the next election right here).

Stockton is a great park, without dogs.

Belmont Pines is another great spot, and they will take dogs (with the usual you know).

There is a nice free camp at Broke out side of Singleton, with a back road into Cessnock.

Broke is a good free camp - as long it is not mosquito time! I got eaten alive there in March. Treid every conceivable thing I had to avoid being eaten - there were also some sandflies. Stockton on the other hand is always breezy so the mosquitoes don't get a chance to land!

If staying at Stockton and considering a day in Sydney it's only a ferry ride and a short walk to Newcastle Station. Seniors/Pensioners can get a $2.50 all day ticket covering the train bus and ferry (including Stockton ferry) and I think now the light rail. There are several train services throughout the day.
