Brake controller wiring

Hi

I have installed a Tekonsha P3 brake controller, and I notice that it appears to be ' on ' all the time.  Is this normal?

I considered putting a switch in the negative line, but wanted to check first.  There is no van connected at this time, just getting ready.

I replaced the Haynam Reece controller with this one, supposed to be better, but am worried about flat battery, if the tug is not used for some time, which is the case.

Have disconnected the unit, as a fix for now.  Any suggestions.  Thanks

Replacing the HR controller with the P3 is a good move. Once set up you'll find it way better than the HR unit.

Check the instruction sheet as it should give you info on the current drawn when not in use. I have a Tekonsha Prodigy and I think it goes into a "sleep" mode when not connected to a trailer, also when the brake has not been used for several minutes when the trailer is hooked up. In short I don't think it's anything to worry about.

I think I've got this right but I'm going on memory so hopefully someone will correct me if there are any errors.

You're probably aware of this but I mention it anyway. Tekonsha is most insistent that the earth wire be connected directly to the negative terminal of the battery and not just to any old earthing point.

(edit to add PS)

PS: I think I'd be a bit "iffy" about switching the negative circuit, Murphy's Law and all that!  Maybe safer to install a two pole switch in both the battery wire and the brake pedal wire perhaps?

Thanks jimricho, I am hesitant to put a switch inline as Murphy says you will forget to turn on.
I'll check the specs, and also leave it 'on' when not being used to see if it does go into sleep mode.
Yes I have read about the earth wire going straight to the battery, as apparently can cause irregular voltages when braking.

I also had in mind that the unit may be confused if it found a path to earth via the brake pedal circuit (eg via the brake lights perhaps?). Your avatar alludes to some technical skills so maybe you can measure the current in various conditions. I'd be interested in what you came up with.

Only measured the brake wire at the breaker and showed 0.04amp, in standby and with no trailer connected.
Have left it connected so shall check whether it is still lit in an hour or so.

All good after 15min screen goes blank if there is no movement or not connected to a trailer

Thanks John, I was curious about the current drawn, saves me having to measure it myself now! smilewink

You'll be happy with the Tekonsha after using the HR unit. You'll most likely find you are using the hand controller much less than before.
