On the road from Mukinbudin WA to somewhere I cant remember, the lizards were the only living thing... 12 live ones, 3 deadies in about 40k's of good gravel road. Mate I cant even remember where we were going, let alone their direction, but I remember those little shingle-backs.
Does anybody else count "Things"?

Management and I travelled down the Pacific Highway to Grafton about two and a half weeks ago. Hardly saw a van all day. We returned to the Brisbane area yesterday (Sunday), There were absolutely hundreds of vans and motorhomes on the road and most of which we saw were actually heading South, I am actually supposed to be packing right now for the trek North, but as management is at the Doctors as we speak, she dosent know I am bludging on here lol. Take care all, our old laptop has died so wont be in touch much for the next three months. Cheers Pete

Have a great trip Pete - we are heading north - but have seen a lot of travellers heading south - we are at Home Hill, and the comfort stop there is packed every night - lucky for us have a friend here with a nice big yard!!! Home Hill is a great stop, and the travellers usually spend some money in the town, the supermarket prices are pretty good, and the meat from there is nice as well - the bakery, which is down a street off the main highway is well worth the detour - apple pies are almost as good as the Bunyip ones in Victoria!!!

I don 't think it matters which road you're travelling on there are caravans out there going in every direction. We travelled the M7 and down through Wollongong and met 35 vans my husband says.
We enjoy counting caravans,... and on remote roads I even count lizards! A few weeks ago on the Pacific Highway they all seemed to be heading North, maybe its the same ones who are coming South now? Enjoy, Petengail.

Wouldn't be heading South just yet. The weather down here is not worth visiting. We will be heading North in a couple of weeks so maybe by then there'll be room for us.
We just south of Darwin and the caravan park is full every day, we have just told to many folks about this park lol there is a waiting list to get in some have to go down the road to an other park until there is a vacant spot.
We are currently in Cairns and the caravan park has a fairly high turnover each day but is constantly fairly full, and others in the park tell us that Cooktown is also fairly full (our next stop) but on our way up to Cairns we also saw a lot of vans heading south.
I also wave to other travellers but only get about 50% response.

Old mate, not every one of us silly ole chaps travels in conjuction with the grey nomad madness of dashing from one end of the country to the other in order to avoid the cold or heat.
Nearly every day I see some poor ole sole pull into a camp late, often on the death of darkness, where he madly rushes around like a looney & early the next day at some sparrow farts time he's up again early and off with haste to cover a few more hundred miles so he can pull up in the dark again. He eventually travells from the far south to the far north, just so he can sit around some camp spot for months on end and whine about the cost of diesel etc etc.
For me, I take the much more sensible approach and just tour the land to see the land and sometimes in all my insanity I end up going around and around the same area until Ive exhaused all avenues......which leads to my point, last week I was south bound on the highway & this week I will double trek back over a small section of the highway in a northerly direction to head inland a little to check out something else that my previous path didnt cross.
Last weeks highway traveller that past me as I was southboud is now going to see me northbound and a few days after that I will be southbound again unless I forge some southbound path thru the scrub.
So anyway, never asume when it comes to what you are seeing because not everything is as it might first appear.
mad as a hatter, I am Gerty, but when I travel, I like to see the whole area. I have no destination. Some days I travel 30-40-50 odd kilometres, sometimes I don't move for weeks. Normally I get going when the tuckerbox gets a bit low. I havent bought Diesel since early May and I've still got about 100 litres left in the tank.
Well HW, I hope to see you out there doin that, theres a lack of good sorts such as yourself out there.......hard for an old bach like me when theres nobody to wink at
I will check in with you when I head south at the end of July / early August You might be in the same area. Will be leaving here 30th July heading down the Newell at this stage.
How far south are you heading HW? I really want to head out to the Dubbo zoo, never been there and have heard its very good. Might go and see a few of my primate brothers and cousins.
The Dubbo is well worth visiting Jack Biggles. I am heading to Vic for a 40th wedding anniversary early August and staying on for my grandsons 1st birthday beginning Sept.
