Hi Beth, I was in that horrible place Dandenong today so decided to come home Via Berwick and check out Akoona Park and there are power sites available but not a lot. I'm not sure if you get a key to the Toilets etc but they were closed and about six CV's and a very large 5th Wheeler there. I didn't see any people around though and didn't have a lot of time to hang around.

Gee Doug and Keith - I live in Dandenong.  I know it is a little ethnically challenged and there are a few unsavoury characters around; but there are some nice people - as there are in other towns and cities across Australia.  There are many worse places around both here and interstate.

It is unfortunate that many people think that Dandenong the suburb is the same place as the Dandenong Ranges.

And yes Beth, Olinda and other towns in the area are very reminiscent of Mt Tambourine area.

Esmeralda, as I said in an earlier post; I apologise to any Dandenongians.   You are, of course, quite correct.   Every town has its little 'problem corners'.   I only picked on Dandenong because it was on the post and it diverted attention from the problems in my town.   It was very mean spirited of me but genuinely meant in bon homie.  I can remember when Dandenong City boated the biggest livestock and produce market of its era and I am sad to have seen it pass.   Please don't think poorly of me.  Doug, however is a very naughty person and deserves your utter wrath.   I believe you you really take him to task for his unwarranted attack on your beautiful city.  For shame Doug, for shame.LOL

I'm so glad that Douge and Keith are taking the blame for what was said about Dandenong haha but I must face up and appologise if I've offended you Esmeralda for what I said too.  I do know that there are a lot of areas that are really nice.  I do have to admit though that I feel a little nervous walking in the city centre on my own but have been to the Heatherton Road Dandenong club numerous times for a lovely meal smile

I too was born and raised in Dandenong, 59 years ago it was a very nice modern growing place with lots of developing industries and new schools and young families moving out to the new suburbs. The kids from Berwick Pakenham and Beaconsfield used to have to bus it in to Dandy to go to High School. I remember as a child a grand parade through the main street when Dandenong became a city. It has continued to grow with many ethnic families moving there and has changed enormously over the years but then so has Noble Park and Springvale. Never the less it is not going to appeal to everyone and it is not exactly a tourist destination. I go back a couple of times a year to see friends and family and it is still home to me. The Dandenong Rangers of course is a completely different story and anyone travelling there should have lovely time, I am always amazed by the sound of the bell birds as you drive through the hills. Hey Esmeralda I wonder if we know each other??

I didn't want to upset anyone Esmeralda and yes, I do agree with you about many different characters and all areas have good and bad. Gee just here in down town Wonthaggi we have "unsavoury" characters in fact many people here refer to them as "Ferrils". So if I have offended you or anyone else, sorry. I will give myself a rap on the knuckles. I lived and worked in Dandenong for years as I said and was glad to have the change.

Thanks Gill, as I said, I'm the biggest cold frog, so I will certainly be bringing warm layers as well as summer things. I'll be prepared, don't you worry about that! wink
