Where to stay around Ballarat Vic

The next on my list of 'ask the GN's' is for the Ballarat region. This is for our trip in Oct/Nov....

As far as I can see in Camps 6, there's no camps near to Ballarat, unless someone out there knows of one not listed...

So, I'd appreciate opinions on these CP's please.

Shady Acres CP, Big 4 Goldfields, Big 4 Welcome Stranger, Eureka Stockade.

I too have stayed at "Welcome Stranger" and agree with snapper49. It would be a good choice Beth.

We live not far from Ballarat and would have liked to meet up but we will be away from Sept - Nov. Maybe meet up with some at Greens lake later in the year.

Cheers

Lake Burrumbeet Caravan Park would be my choice.
Quite, nice view across the lake, and a lot cheeper than the Big4's.

I stayed at the Creswick CP about 15kms from Ballarat. A lot cheaper than anything in Ballarat. Quirky place - kind of run more like a campsite than a CP - owner simply said to go and find myself a site and tell him the site no. later. Clean amenities. Small town with 1 supermarket but hardware store does cheap gas fills. Woollen mill is about the only tourist attraction.

Try smythesdale gardens  about  15 ks  out of Ballarat on the Glenelg hwy has  toilets and showers. I believe the cost is a small donation to the Smythsdale progres association.

Hey Beth,
after Ballarat, are you planning on a Melbourne visit? An alternative to travelling through the city is to go from Ballarat to Geelong, then Queenscliff, and catch the vehicle ferry to Sorrento. Then you can meander up to the Princes Highway, well east of Melbourne. When we used the ferry, they gave a good discount for catching the first service at 7am. It is not a cheap option, but probably works out about equal in terms of petrol used, road tolls etc. to going through the city - and is a hell of a lot less stressful.

I just copy and paste into a new window.

But yes, I've taken note about Wilsons Prom.

I agree 200% wendy. I am actually coming home that way from Mildura in a few weeks. Doing it that way Beth you get to see some of he Mornington Peninsula as well. Also and as well even have a look at your map as you could cut across from Mornington Via Tyabb and Tooradin down to Phillip Island and those little Penguins you want the see. Gee, the way things are going you will be on the road for months. You could spend weeks just in Gippsland. Ahh, Victoria, great one day, heaps to see and do the next and next and next etc etc.

Oh! The short drive down the not too windy hill into Lakes Entrance is A O K Beth, Great views, your rig should cope with no problems, the North Arm is too the left just as you cross the bridge at the round about at the bottom of the hill.

Not sure mate but for you I will find out. I don't spend much time at Metung it self, it's too commercialised now for such a tiny village. A lot of the water frontage is now taken up with town houses.

last time we were there (about 20 years ago) it was a great little place not many people knew about it, just one shop, one caravan park and Bulls Boats

Wendyv, we'll be heading from Echuca, through Bendigo, Ballarat, and across to Portland. Then along the Great ocean Road and east.

Now that you mention the ferry to Sorrento, I might look into that. We had discussed it briefly, and it does sound appealing.

Back to Ballarat, it sounds like lots of choices. Thanks for the info folks.

Doug, yes, there's so much to see! This trip is all about seeing Vic, and the south coast of NSW, so we'll try to not take too much time getting down and back. We'll have about 9 weeks.

I've seen a bit of NSW, but further exploration will have to be another time.

Beth, don't missout on Wilsons Prom, make sure you stay at a CP outside of the NP as the fee's are $50-55 a night with power, go in as a day visitor.

The ferry is well worth the trip, did it last year.

Dougwe, do you know how to make your link's linkable?

Dougwe's reply "No"

OK try this, at the start of the web address put [ u r l ] at the end put [ / u r l ] now I had to put a space between each [ and the text, so DO NOT put in the spaces, if I had left out the spaces the text between would show as a link leading nowhere, give it a try, mate
