I'm with Gerty Dancer here - we have used some very good CPs and some good freecamps. I think it ends up being an attitude thing. You can meet as many friendly people in either place. But that said, it is also an economic thing. And as I said on another post we need to be careful about our use of 'free' camping - stealth parking may end up cancelling out other free camps for us all.
Yep - free camping in a designated area is fine - don't think I would park up in a back street in most of the big towns - could be dangerous. tho someone said today, they have parked in cemetary car parks, no one bothers you there. hahahaha!!

I like 'independant camping', 'bush camping' or even 'campgrounds'.
Where we had our GN get together in May, was a 20 acre 'campground' with the freedom to park wherever we liked, no strict rules, nice hot showers and toilets, and really nice hosts...I didn't mind paying $10.
Where we are now - free camp - there are about 25 "sites" - everyone just moves around, over to make room for others - woke up this morning to see a couple of backpacker vans squeezed in - no problem - all the people here are friendly, even met a relative by marriage - everyone looks after each others stuff if you wander along the beach - only trouble - bit chilly to be sitting out at night socialising!
