My Toyota Prado performed well on the way up to Mildura after all the work on it earlier in the year but boy is it thirsty, I know it is so shouldn't complain I spose, it cost me $65.00 to get up here so when I think about it that's not too bad. Took two fill ups at $30.00 and $35.00. Sometimes I think I should have gone Diesel, never mind, next time.
There is a few GN's in the park as well so I'm sure I'll get chatting soon enough and I will be sure to bring The Grey Nomads web site into the conversation. I must do something about a flag or banner.
Bring on the next 10 days.
Just a thought Dougwe. I have a Rodeo and like all the 'commercially designed' vehicles with big mirrors and poor drag co efficient, I find that dropping to 90 k.p.h. makes a huge difference to my consumption on a highway cycle. I can get just on 500 ks on a 57 ltr tank at that speed. At 100 to 110 I only get about 400 or a little under. This is not towing but I found similar proportionate returns towing either a 2+ tonne boat or a large commercial dual axle trailer plud load. We used to find the same thing in the Landcruisers and Nissans we used in VicPol. Even 5 k.p.h over 90 made an appreciable difference and 110 kph put it through the roof (not that we were paying for the juice but it got us through a shift with fewer fiils).
With the higher 'flat front' body of my M.H. I have found 80 to 85 kph is it's top economical. For what it's worth.

Hmm thought it was a bit quite on here ?? now i know why ??
$65 for the trip from Gippsland to Mildura does not sound to bad ??? do you know how many litres you used and how many Klm's it was ????
When i went at Xmas to Midura, I left from the mates place at Exford in Vic and it took me 120 Ltrs of Lpg to do the 530 Klm's, avg price was o.66cents so total cost was around $79.00 for the trip up there, My vehicle is a 2011 Holden Colarado duel cab, with factory fitted Duel/Fuel, and my van is a 19' Lotus Fully loaded nearly 2400 kgs
So $65 on petrol towing your Avan sounds quite reasonable to me, so stop complaining, it's not to bad and the Prado petrol is a good reliable comfortable vehicle,
Anyway your on holidays now so just enjoy your catch-ups and your 10 day break, the weather SHOULD be much better up there, and even if it's not it is still a great place to be, And if Wombat or BH start picking on you while you are away, you know you can ''trust'' me to back you up. Enjoy mate ? dazren

Gday...
On those figures -
$65 @ $1.40/ltr = 46ltrs of fuel.
Lets assume 580km Dandenong to Mildura (coz I don't know where in Sth Gippy you started your journey) using 46ltrs of fuel = 7.9ltr/100km or 35mpg or 12km/ltr.
Those are incrediblely frugal fuel consumption figures for a petrol anything- let alone towing even a 6x4 trailer !
Why would you think that is thirsty?????
There is not a diesel on the market that could get anywhere near that sort of economy - unless it was a little 4cyl Peugot or similiar - and that wouldn't tow ya Avan
Cheers - John

However, if you are running LPG then the figures may look like this perhaps -
$65 @ .70c/litre = 86ltrs
Assuming 580km Dandenong to Mildura (coz I don't know the beginning of the journey would mean 14.8ltr/100km or 19mpg or 6.7km/ltr.
So if running on LPG then the figures are still a pretty economical vehicle - you wouldn't get from Dandy to Mildura on $65 with a diesel (and definitely not with a petrol I would think)
Cheers - John

Toughen up Doug, If you buy a petrol guzzler that is what you will get I got 10.3 lts /100 and 16.6 towing big van spend some money and get a ranger diesal Ken
I have just done an assessment on Myrtle's petrol consumption. Filled the tank,. Went 300 ks, refilled and it took 39 litres. unleaded. So that works out at 13 litres per 100 ks. Not too bad for a 1981 Toyota HiAce with a rebuilt motor. I presume its not too bad anyway. Could be worse.
Sorry to those that think this post should have gone in Techies' Corner but I did have a debate with myself as to where it should go but lost the debate and it ended up here.
I got the Gas/Petrol combo because I had a Falcon Sedan Gas/Petrol combo and was happy with 500km a 60 ltr tank of gas but I am not even getting 300 km a 60 ltr tank on the Prado so I have been a bit disappointed HOWEVER what I didn't think of was the Prado is bigger and heavier so naturally it is not going to get the same km per tank, I should have thought of that but didn't, never mind. My next car will be a Deisel 4x4 Ranger or similar.

Ken that's pretty impressive. I get a tad under 12L/100Km on normal everyday driving my 4.2L turbo diesel Toyota Troopy. When Towing a camper trailer up to Alice and back via Uluru, I was averaging 17.5L/100Km. But it was a pretty rushed trip and cruising at at least 110Kph. Dropping back to leisurely speeds around 95Kph to 100Kph it is around 13L/100Km
Doug, have you worked out exactly how many litres you are using to the 100ks.? You say you have a 60 litre tank and only getting 300ks, I have a 58 litre tank and can get 450ks. Are you sure you have that right.
I have a 2008 diesel auto Prado 9.5 lts per 100 klm highway , 14.6 lts per 100 klm towing 18ft 6 full caravan . to compare we need to know what model Prado
Approx 300km per 60 ltr tank is correct and no I haven't done the maths yet and don't think I'll bother actually, only because it will probably make me more dissapointed. Without the Avan on back it is approx 380km on open road but around home about the 300km again.
Hi brickies,
It's a 1998 Auto Prado Wagon Gas/Petrol and towing a Avan "Sportliner" Camper about 900kg total weight, only going by the book and what I have on board with that though. One day when I get a chance I will put on weigh bridge and get actual.
I think I will put it in to a auto gas mob and get it serviced and adjusted properly as I really don't think the "Idiot " Mechanic that had it earlier in the year with all that trouble did it properly. It is due for a car service soon so will talk to my mechanic first and see what he thinks.
Most mechanic's are good thank goodness.

Call me old and contankerous .... but the only language I listen to in regards to fuel consumption is Litres per 100km. That's the standard!
I just can't relate to Km per Litre or Kms per tank or whatever.
What makes me more grumpy is that my old 4.2L EFI (petrol) Patrol uses 19L/100k pulling a 2.4 ton van at around 90km/hr. But it has done this for almost 200,000Km & I did all the big distances when fuel was less than $1/Litre.
Mind you I do watch my usage as I go expecting certain distances for each quarter tank & looking for reasons if the usage varies from the expected rate.
Sorry If I made you grumpy Cupie with my lingo but I'm a bit thick and can't remember exactly how to work out Lts per 100km etc. I used to look out the window during maths classes and now I think Uncle Al is creeping around.

not sure about the grumpie stuff, but most nomads should understand k's to the litre or miles to the gallon. most cars in the 70's and 80's used to do around 18 to 25 miles to the gallon. so if we can get that towing thats not to bad. not sure what mileage they got towing back then.
