I will second that

Uniden is quality gear and if it fails they can usually be repaired rather than having to replace the entire unit.

good choice wombat

I would also go Uniden, I'm looking for a handheld that doesn't need to be installed.

Thanks heaps Wombat. I'm looking for a 5 watt single with mouthpiece and there is some on ebay, pretty reasonably priced.

Thanks again.

Good thread.
For occasional use to contact passing vehicles or to liaise with someone in a campsite, is it better to have a "fitted" radio or just a hand-held?
I appreciate that the "fitted" units have longer range.
Any indication of how much it costs to have them fitted?
Cheers, Tony

Thinking of buying one myself. AutoPro (Toowoomba) today quoted me $110 to fit to car plus $80 for antenna. Local firms wanted $80 to $100 for fitting items purchased from them. Good luck with your decision
Regards
Ken

I have a Uniden 5 watt handheld 80 channel. Also have 2 x 1 watt handhelds for closer work.

I have a 4 db gain antenna for hilly work and a 9 db gain for out on flatter terrain.

The 5 watter clips to my sun visor and is within easy reach.

My Uniden with "rubber ducky" antenna serve me well. I also have a GME hand-held with lapel clip microphone.
It's wise to check out all options.

Hi tonyd, this guy fits all the truckies here in Perth, I think mine was $80 to fit, purchased mine on eBay.

Many thanks for that Wombat. I shall give him a call, especially after the disaster with my local auto electrician swapping my brake controller from one vehicle to another. He ripped me off unmercifully, then got a bit stroppy when I pointed out that the control unit was upside down and back to front!
The arrival of my (WA-made) camper trailer draws near, so I'm tuning up the bits and pieces on the Colorado tow truck -- roof rack, snorkel and UHF radio.
Cheers, TonyD
