We are considering the same question Bill. It seems the main point is what sort of travelling do you do... lots of one-night stops, or do you get to a place and stay a week or more. A motorhome suits moving-on but a caravan suits the stay-a-while trips. The other consideration is, if you buy a motorhome, will you keep your current 4wd... if so thats 2 vehicles to maintain and register.

So many if's.....

There are advantages and disadvantages to both, it really depends how you travel and what your interests are when you arrive at your destination.
In our case our main travels have been to look after the grandsons in the school hols so we needed transport at our destination to cart the boys round and could never see the point in towing a car behind a MH as this removes one of the main advantages of a motor home
There is much less setting up with a MH on arrival and departure, but then your home has to go with you everywhere you go and from experience a MH is great for touring with only short stays at each destination .
The one main disadvantage with a MH is the financial depreciation compared to a caravan as the smaller vans seem to hold there value for along period after purchase, in my experience you will still get most of your money back at 10 years old.
The main advantage as I see it with caravan is the tow vehicle can be used as your transport all the time when not towing and the van can just be left in th carport until needed again and the amount of money invested in a good van does not need to be all that big.

we went through all that too and opted for a coaster, its small enough to fit in a shopping centre car park, takes a little more fuel that my car at home.... and we just stop and walk thro to the back which is handy if it's raining.... but you can't go 4w driving in it which is to us a set back... then again the comfort is pretty good seeing as we want to stay on the road for a year or more..... hard decision to make tho and totally a personal one....

I reckon it all depends on the size of your wallet Bill.

We had a caravan for a few years once, many years ago.
NEVER again.
We also had a slide-on for 12 years and quickly fixed it permanently to the vehicle (and reduced the registration costs by 50% as a direct result).

Check out the REAL weights of a 4WD with tinny on the top towing a caravan. I suggest that most/many are dangerously and illegally overloaded.

And describing MHs as only good for short stops is not valid. Many full timers prefer MHs.
Nor is a MH restricting in where they can go. A Coaster will go where most caravans can not.
Not much point having to leave all the comforts and toys behind before you even get to those great spots.
