The Echuca one closed down last year and the lotto shop took over selling in a corner of their shop. What a shame, I love Darrel lea. Too many of the great little businesses of yesterday have gone to be replaced by the huge warehouse type that has no appeal.
They are Australian made and anything made locally is in dire straits competing against the imports, one by one they drop off the perch under the barrage of pressure unfortunately.
The old story of "you can't have it both ways", on one hand we want top wages and on the other we want the cheapest products, the result is one is destined to fail.
Jetj - I think other shops have been selling Darrell Lea as small 'franchises' of them not in competition. Did anyone else know their trick for getting you into the shops?? They used to have a vaporiser (like you use for sick kids) in a corner behind the door with aniseed oil in it! You would smell the aniseed, walk in looking for that lovely licorice or aniseed product but never find anything quite as nice as the smell - but still walk out after buying something. Cunning.
Just saw on the news, there are 69 Darrell Lea stores and about 1600 other stores franchised to sell the Darrell Lea products. So its got nothing to do with the fact other shops selling their stocks for a while. They always have, thats the way it works. Or did work.
yep i knew the catch of the aniseed smell to get you in there some one told me that years ago isnt that funny jim my bookeeper was only saying the other day that her husband said cadbury chocolate has turned to crap ,i havent realy noticed it i did love the chocolate coated aniseed rings from darrell lea
Yep I with you JC, we now buy the Aldi's Chocolate, It is very good and real chocolate made from cocoa We buy the Dark 45% Cocoa, it we like it a lot and would eat around a block and a half per week, our friends by the Aldi Milk Chocolate and the love it to.
I normally buy the Aldis chocolate too, but at the moment have the Belgium dark chocolate that comes in brown packaging. A quite large block for under 4.00. Got 2 blocks when last in Bundy. Only allow myself 4 small squares a day. Should last a while.

They went broke for no other reason, than they were supplying a product that no one wants anymore, to stay in business you have to change with the times and always make sure that your product is right for the market place, you cannot mark time no matter how successful you may have been in the past.
