I had gold injections in my shoulder many years ago. I presume they are a type of cortisone. Half an hour later after each one I was doubled up with stomach cramps, couldn't walk, was so bad.
Where have you got the bursitis beth.

Hip. Very painful to walk.

Beth - I have a form of bursitis in my knee - years of plaing competition racquetball - was initially offered some treatment - but chose to go with my own, which is a leg strap worn just under the kneecap - works for me - would be a lot more difficult on a hip, though! I hate injections - and have told that cortisone is the pits - and only lasts for a while - never had one, so don't know if this is true. Take care.

Beth I have bursitis and arthritis in both my shoulders , have been having cortisone injections for 6 years now, they don't last long but they are magic, short term fix but hey some relief is better then none............

I was diagnosed with bursitis in both hips many years ago and the pain comes and goes. I've had cortisone injections under the guidance of ultrasound in both hips on two occasions and it made no difference. The injections are not pleasant and I vowed I would never put myself through it again.

Apart from being unable to sleep on my side for any length of time, it doesn't affect my life too much.

I've also had problems with my knee in the last few years, so this hip problem is now causing knee problems again too. I feel like it's throwing my whole body out of alignment. If I could afford it, I would go the a Remedial Therapist for deep massage and Accupunture. They don't come cheap.

My doctor said that when they do the Ultrasound, if her diagnosis is found to be correct they can do the injection then and there under Ultrasound. (This is with Qld Xray.) When I rang to make the appointment, she said it can only be done at one of the hospitals listed. Well all the hospitals on their list are private ones and they want to charge me $188 up front, and I'd get back all but $55 from Medicare. Naturally I said 'what the? I'm on a DSP, I don't normally pay anything.'

So I've made the appt at my local Q Xray for just the Ultrasound. I'm hoping my doctor can do the injection when I see her again on Thursday. confuse

Hi Beth,

I had terrible pain in one of my hips about five years ago and was convinced i needed a hip replacement it was so bad!!

Went to the doc who told me i had Bursitis, and through ultrasound, was given a cortisone injection.

It was quite sore at the injection site for a while....but after that i had no pain at all.

Five years later......all good!

My old Auntie has had injections of cortisone into her shoulder and says it gives her great relief although the injection site is a bit uncomfortable for a day or two. We arent all the same though. Let us know how it goes for you Beth?

Had a close friend with ongoing hip pain...and like someone said worse getting up and down, and can't lie one the side at night.

Her daughter researched on the internet, and suggested panadol osteo twice daily. It took a couple of weeks to work, and then the pain went. Every now and again it starts back, and she's off for more panadol.

I'm on Panadol Osteo for my aches and pains. The doc said Osteo Arthritis but do they ever know what you really have.
Going for a massage in the morning. Found a lady who comes to Biggy every second week. 40.00 for an hour of deep massage. Looking forward to it.
She said to drink plenty of fluids beforehand or the toxins will play havoc after.

Yes Beth. Bursitis of the hip is very common. And I said no to cortisone injections after having had them in arm for tennis elbow. First one lasted 6 months. Second lasted 4 months. I then had laser and ultrasound at the physio (hospital so didn't cost). It took 12 months but it has never come back. My bursitis has disappeared from the hip since I got orthotics. Maybe that is the answer. I went for orthotics because I had heel spurs (plantar fasciitis) but realised only recently that the hip had stopped hurting too. Opposite side to heel. I don't go anywhere without the orthotics. My reaction to the cortisone injections was to burst into tears as soon as I walked out of the surgery. Uncontrollable sobbing. Not a thing I could do about it. And it happened both times. So what is it doing to the body??

Gee that's cheap Marj. I haven't found anyone in my area under $80. Still looking though.

I'll have to look up Panadol Osteo, see what else is in it besides paracetamol. I can't have any asprin products.

Going in and out of my place is all stairs, which is hard going. I find it easier if I do one step at a time, and lead with the left. (The right hip is the problem)

Nothing else Beth, just a higher dosage from what I read on the packet.
I used to pay 70.00 for a massage down in Echuca so was excited when I found this lady.

I had burstitis in my hip a few years ago - it hurt like hell. I had the cortison injection and that worked. Mind you I also had bad arthritis in that hip and had a hip resurfacing a year or so later. I still get pain in that hip, although nowhere near as bad. My other hip is complaining now too. That's what cold weather in Melb will do for you!! Brrr

Hi Beth, I have had problems with my hip of late. Years ago it was a shoulder that was damaged....I had x-rays,ultra sound, injections and eventually told I would not be able to drive as I couldnt lift my arm. I went to a Bowen therapist (who is also a remedial mass) 3 visits later I was driving and havent had a problem with my shoulder since. I have just been to the same lady about my hip and had 2 visits and things are ok. The cost seems alot but I try to think of it in terms of a car...or camper. If the car needs something fixed we seem to be able to find the $$ somewhere.
as much as we like our cars ....we need to look after ourselves as well.

I also have Arthritis sucastja. For quite awhile now, it's been mainly in my middle finger on the right hand. The end joint is very bent and very painful all the time. From time to time I have trouble with my right knee as well. It's painful at the moment because of the hip, I think.

That's very interesting Colls. I've heard of a few people who've had Bowen Therapy with good results. I don't mind paying if it fixes it with just a couple of visits.

Well the Ultrasound is at 9am tomorrow, but I haven't booked for the Cortisone injection just yet. I might ask my friend about the Bowen Therapy.

Maybe that's what's wrong with my hip. Sure sounds like it, reading all these posts. Will check with Dr. later this week. Also see what he says re. Panadol Osteo.

Well, I've read my own results...as you do wink ...and I quote...

Findings: There is no fluid in the trochanteric bursa. There is minor fluid towards the gluteus medius bursa with some irregularity of the bursal surfaces.

Impression: There is minimal fluid adjacent in the gluteus medius bursa however there is no gross trochanteric bursa seen.

My understanding of that is that there's very little fluid where there's supposed to be fluid, but it's not real bad! Am I right? confuse Feels bad enough to me! cry

I can't see my GP until Thursday, so I'll just have to wait to see what she thinks should be done.

In the meantime, I got some Panadol Osteo today, so I'm hoping that will help. My Arthritic finger has been giving me curry today.

I also got the phone number for a Bowen Therapist who was recommended to me, and I'll ring in the morning to see when I can see her.

I'm just hoping this is under control before I head off in October. I know how much pain you were in at Cobb & Co Marj...it's bugga when you're wanting to travel hey.

Oh, that was painful Beth. Other than the work Rod did on it I haven't had anything else to relieve it and made it worse by trying to get things done around here.
Went for my massage this morning. She was good. From 9am to 10.20am for $40.00. Have booked in for another in a fortnight.
I hope you can get some relief now. Hope the panadol osteo helps. Take the maximum dose while its bad and rest.
Not like me, came home rested for a couple of hours then outside to chop down a hedge. Left all the rubbish lying where I cut it down as had enough. Will wheelbarrow it out the back tomorrow.

I get my Panadol Osteo on script Sheba. Two large boxes at a time. Prescribed by my Echuca doctor.

I just asked my local chemist if I could take Panadol Osteo, because he has my other meds on file and I go there all the time. He did point out to take the proper dose. It's not like you just take it when it's painful. You have to keep going with it.

If it works well for me Marj, I'll ask my doctor for a script. I used to get scripts for Imodium when the Colitis was really bad.
