Seeing that three quarters of the population live over there, I have made a point of staying away from the east coast for some years. But, as the CMCA, (solos) are having a get together over there in October, it's time to go back. I did the magnificent Tweed River scenic drive when last there, and at the point called "The Panorama", I was stunned at the magnificent view. BUT, somewhere on that trip, I think northern NSW, high country, I drove a road that had a number HUGE craters just off the road. There was no explanation signs, but they appeared to be giant "sinkholes", and it was virtually impossible to see the bottom. Do you know where they are, please !!?? Also, when leaving a small town up on the range, the locals said to avoid the highway, and take the old convict road down towards the coast. It was the sort of a road that one wouldn't take a caravan down, but the M/H was no trouble. When I got down to the flat road, I drove through a cutting in the rockface that had been carved out by convicts. (?) Can't remember where that was, either. Advice, Please
Went there last week with the kids, The Bundy Mystery Craters. Waste of money, not worth the effort. You can see the same rock formations anywhere aroudn Aus. Have seen photos on the coast and out in the outback.

Hi Pipes just did a google did you go to the Hunter Valley area? There is a road called the Great North Road, built by convicts, goes from sydney to the hunter valley it is on the convict trail.... Cheers Bronnie
Not sure if this is what you are looking for pipes ,Check out the Mt Warning area , it is an old volcano with a huge valley surounding it.
Its located in northern NSW, North from Murwillumbah & visable from the pacific hwy south of the Qld/NSW border.

That sounds to me what you are after, the Great North Road near Sydney to the Hunter Valley is more of a walking track in places and a Sydney road in others.

That's a great area Jim, but I don't think there's any convict roads in that area. Have you ever been through the Numinbah Valley, past Natural Bridge/Arch, and over the border to Murwillimbah? Lovely drive.

G'day Pipes, search google maps and insert Mt Warning Caldera scenic rim and see if this is what you remember. If not I would recommend it as a magnificent drive (allow a day to enjoy stopping and viewing the scenery) that will take you from NSW and into Qld. It takes in a National park that will ask you for a "donation". There are a few ways of seeing the area without doing the full scenic rim drive. If taking in Mt Warning, Natural Bridge in Numinbah valley then take care to secure your vehicle and remove valuables as they are unfortunately targetted by our lesser life forms.
These area's have little in way of cafe's etc so a thermos may be handy.
Thank you, to everyone for your input. Yes, Mt Warning was definately in the frame. I'll be heading east next week, and hope to catch up with a few G/N. Regards. Pipes
