Moranbah

Travelled Mackay to Moranbah. Free camp at the pub #81 was fine but decided to go to Issac River rest area #84. No toilet and sign saying no camping. Was late in the day so stopped to Peak Downs Roadhouse just down the road.  Very obliging and let us stay on the grass there and use the shower and toilets. Had dinner there in returnsmile Apparently you can stay at the river but they have had trouble with people dumping waste in the water etc - the towns drinking water - hence the sign!

2 caravan parks at Moranbah are almost totally full of workers although we did manage to get the last site available. Masses of trucks on the road - and mining utes. A very distinct shortage of GN's on the roads though.confuse

Found a very helpful mechanic who has tightened my brakes and will check the wheel bearings on the van. (Mine Assist)

I agree there's not much in Moranbah, but the people are friendly enough.

Hi Spida,
I'm at Emerald QLD (another mining town). At the Higher Ground Homestay (#332 CAW) Camp Ground about 18k's out. Nice bush camp. $5 pn.

Very different type of town though msq.  Emerald was not built to accomodate the coal mines.

Cheers,

Sheba.

Still largely mine trucks everywhere and nearly everyone works for the mines. Good thing is, its fairly large with several shopping centres and most amenities. CP's are full of workers. Nice botanical gardens too. Though I don't fancy staying at the free camp under the bridge, much nicer out here.

WE (my sister is travelling with me for a couple of weeks) had a very pleasant couple of days at Moranbah and the 'musical park' at the Library is a must see - very clever and fun to play. We did go to see a friend on a station which filled one day.
