Hi Chalky, I am not sure what type of 4WD you drive, but many already have an LSD in the rear, a and a center lock, if this is your case it really makes sense to fit a locker in the front. This combination will take you almost anywhere it makes sense to go.

Just be aware that a front locker can do strange things with your steering until you get used to it.

I had a winch on the front of my Patrol, the only times I ever used it was to rescue Landcruisers.

Interesting question. I was getting my winch serviced today and happened to ask the bloke about air lockers for my son's 2000 Turbo Diesel 4X4 HiLux. Air lockers certainly make a standard 'open' diff 4X4 extremely versatile in difficult terrain.

Air locker front and rear, air compressor plus installation came out at about $3,500.

I agree they will make a considerable difference if you do a lot of 'serious' 4X4ing, but if you just wander through most tracks and don't get into very difficult terrain, I doubt it would be worth the price - or effort.

Bottom line I guess is it depends on how you use the 4X4 and how often you would need air lockers.

Don't have diff locks, but would like one

Re the winch....
Mostly used for getting out of somewhere we should not have gone, so having a winch up the front is not often the best place.
This is our 15,500lb winch (and synthetic cable).
It can be mounted front, back or side and pull in any direction.

Thanks 4 the comments. In answer its a prado. Looking @ doing the canning and other desert trips in the future, thought the lockers would make a difference
