Food for thought

Yet another road accident has taken place at a roadworks. It's so easy to misjudge the stopping distance at times. It appears that this last one the truck that run up the end of the stopped vehicle just did not see the stoppage. Discussing the other day with someone the comments was made " well a good thing to do would be to turn your hazard lights on" this would give a driver a better chance to see that things have changed in front of them and hence help to avoid a repeat of those accidents at roadworks stops. I for one will be doing that from now on. Brian

Oh gosh Brian, it is getting bad. Where did this one happen. I posted about the Bruce Highway Maryborough one last week. Beth put up a post about using hazard lights at road works. Sure will be doing that from now on.
Is it poor concentration or not enough signage far enough back to warn drivers.

I think maybe the sun has a lot to do with it - it is difficult when you are driving into the sun to see stop lights etc., and as we all know, if we are in for a long wait, you don't sit with your foot on the brake - still a lot has to do with inattention(?????) by drivers - both trucks and other vehicles. We have to be aware all the time I feel.

Yea it was about the accident last week. We have been in a situation where we almost got sandwiched at a road works recently. It was a long stop so of course, turned off the engine and took my foot off the brake as you would. Did not even think about someone not stopping at the time. Have to say took my breath away but did not think about it anymore but after our discussion about hazard lights I have decieded that will be the way we do it at these roadworks stops. If it help only a little we have to have a better chance of not being another victim. I agree with the hazards lights at these works they will give everyone a much better heads up as they approach.

Yes, you have convinced me as well. Hazard lights on, in future.

Sounds a good idea - maybe the road companies could have signs asking people to put hazards on - how else is it going to become standard practice.

Several years ago while driving a hired car in Germany, I noticed the practice of folk to use hazard lights whenever they're obliged to slow down unexpectedly, particularly in autobahn conditions.

I assumed it to be law over there.

Haven't done it myself since but the current feeling on our site certainly reminds and encourages me to do so.

Maybe we should persuade all our motoring friends to think likewise, especially in the current Aussie environment where in our travels over the last couple of years we've found significant works

happening all around the country.
