Thread titles

I also agree, I look down the titles of the threads and lots don't interest me, but often there is something within the thread that is really interesting. I don't associate the thread with the title and miss what else is posted.

Please everybody I know I'm nagging but could you put the subject of your thread in the title?  Otherwise it wont show up in any searches later, and theres some really interesting thoughts and info being missed because of this. Not to mention those readers that scan titles and only read those that sound interesting/informative to them.

At present we have a "Food for thought" in the general forum relating to road safety, and a "Food for thought" in the "I Digress" forum relating to a flag or other identifaication for GN's. They are both great threads, but will never be found in future searches using the search facility on this program.

Totally agree Gerty but think we are thought of as nagging as nobody seems to take any notice.

I had the same problem the other day trying to find a thread. Couldn't because the title was misleading and never to be found again.

I have to agree also, it makes it so much easier if you know what the subject is about if it is clear from the title in the beginning.......

How will this work just did a search on titles and only got 5 results , maybe if you have these ideas run it past Cindy to see if it will work

How will what work brickies? I thought it was a known fact to put something appropriate in the title pertaining to the subject you are going to talk about.
Also a good idea to put it in the right topic, eg Techies corner, Solos etc.

Then if you are looking for something it will be a lot easier. For instance. I have a thread in Health and Wellbeing, entitled Sciatica. If I put in the title "Need some advice" instead of sciatica, how would it ever be found by someone else looking for the same advice.

Yes you do only get 5 results but that is another matter which hopefully Cindy can sort out. If you go into Advanced search you can then put inthe title and the topic you want to look in.

This has been talked about so many times in here and yet not many get it.

Another example would be Tyres or Battery in Techies Corner.

Now if I am looking for advice on Tyres I would pop to the Techies and scroll down till I saw the title Tyres. Easy.

But if the title was "What do you think about this" and I was scrolling anywhere, I would not have a clue what it was about.

I agree, it does seem more prevalent on this forum than any other forum that I follow. It seems that some posters pride themselves to start their post with a cryptic heading and I tend to just pass these by, as I don't want to waste my time on something that might not be off interest, it is unfortunate that you can't get a brief view of the post by just pointing at the heading, it would also be great to go staight to the first new post instead of having to scroll down through all the posts to get to the latest post.
Cheers

Another good example is a lot of Techie stuff gets put into the Solos for reasons only known to themselves.

Now, there are members who don't go into the Solos as they don't travel on their own and don't think there is any relevant information in there for them.

Now I am my soapbox, Sorry but all good info as far as I am concerned.

There is David, if you go into settings after clicking on your own name there is somewhere there you click on new posts first, or similiar words to that. Mine are set that only the ones that were written last and I haven't read are always at the top.

Found it. Click on your own name, then go over to the left hand side and click on Settings.
Find Order of Topics, click on the drop down and select Last Modified.

As has been said. It's best to put tech questions in the Techies Corner etc but, many people, including myself, don't always check threads like the tech one & only pop in once in a while or, for some, never even get around to checking the other threads at all.

It may be a shame but if things are posted in the General Forum then this would get the most views hence more of a chance of the right answer being found.

Cheers

Jon

I like other only look at the general Forum . But I think if someone has an Idea of formating the Forum I would think one would PM Cindy and talk to her first has she is the Webmaster and only she would know what could be achieved or not, Or if it was what she wanted for the Forum , she has a big work load

Sorry brickies I think you misunderstand.
You might have noticed that Cindy has transferred a couple of threads in the last day or two that were obviously in the wrong topic. Its not Cindy's job to make sure we can work out where to put a thread. She has enough of a workload.
Nobody is trying to format the Forum, just trying to find threads we are after. Also knowledge and people who are doing the same as us, travelling.
Have you never been in Techies Corner?? So many technical questions and answers there, it certainly is worth a look as are the other topics.
Have you never been into Solos?? there are fantastic solos in that section you could probably meet in your travels but they only ever write in the Solos section
Oh well, to each their own.

I totally agree Happywander. No need to run it by Cindy, it's common sense to me. For example, I started a post titled Danger on the M1. And because it was pertinant to everyone travelling the roads, I put it in General Forum.

If I'd titled it Stupid bugga, no-one would have known what it was about. Like I said, common sense.

And if you're only reading posts in the General Forum, I'm sorry, but that's your loss! You are missing out on a lot of good info.

Same as those who only ever post in the Solo nomad section, as Marj has said. It's as if they're keeping themselves exclusive.

To me, this site is about sharing info and experiences, and if the thread isn't in the right section with the right title, how are we going to find a particular bit of info in a years time.
