Mt Isa to Boulia

Just came down this road - narrow most of the way, but a really good road - saw about 10 vehicles in all.  Beautiful scenery!

Gday...

And Boulia to Winton is also a great drive - scenery constantly changing - from boring desert vegation to fantastic red dirt country. Take the time to stop at the CAW camps I took 8 days to go from Winton to Boulia last year. Cawnpore Lookout is a must - especially if you can get there late afternoon or early morning. Lillyale range is magnificent. Pic attached.

Middleton pub is a good overnighter - Hilton Hotel - pub is worth the visit.

Cheers - John

Thanks John - not in a great hurry, so will take our time, maybe not 8 days though!! Will do the lookout for sure - we are in Jayco Conquest, will it be ok for us?
Currently stopped off the Donohue Highway, beside the river - beautiful!!!

Gday...

The road is at least as good, if not better, than the Boulia to Djarra road. My 23ft on-road van had no problems - and there was very little traffic. I saw maybe only a dozen vehicles in the whole 8 days.

Cheers - John

Did Winton to Boulia in July, the drive through the Cawnpore Ranges was magificient, stayed 3 nights at Boulia caravan park, with the intention of camping out at the racecource for a week to see the camel races, but  heavy rain (in the dry season) caused a sudden change of plans. So whats the worst thing that can happen in heavy rain on a single lane road........ meeting a ROAD TRAIN COMING THE OTHER WAY & you have to get right off the road to let the R T pass & start praying that you can drive back out of the mud. Sure enough we met a Road Train, let him pass & managed to drive out of the mud ok. (mud terrian tyres helped)

But another caravanner further back who also met the Road Train & was not so lucky & ended up bogged in deep mud, was towed out by a 4WD.

That was a drive that I will never forget !

Whew Coxy45 - we would be in serious trouble in that situation, motorhomes don't like mud!!!!!!! We don't travel too far on country roads if it is raining, specially on the beef roads.
