hi all i have gone and brought the book camps 6 and one thing i noticed was there doesent appear to be much free camping when you travel down the pacific hwy or am i missing something there is a lot down the other highways any ideas fellow travellers
I think you are right Maragaret, theres not much there. Its a busy road and what there is, is well-used and grotty. Theres a couple of nice little towns on the coast that you can escape to though, where are you heading?
There are places where you can't get free camping. Maybe that is one. Another is the Bellarine Peninsula which is the bit from Geelong to Torquay and surrounds. (other beachfronts along the way between the two)
Pacific Highway between Bris and Sydney, there are mainly rest areas, not much free camping but the rest stops are ok. There is a State Forest at Coopernook I think it is and that is about it that I know of.
When we take the van from Newcastle to Victoria, we always use the Newell Highway- west through Singleton ot Dubbo, then due south through lots of lovely towns, and the beautiful Riverina, then the graceful old Murray River, and there we are. Lots of free spots along the way. Rosie
You can stay at the Coopernook Hotel. Not very far off the highway. Gumma Reserve Just outside of Macksville is another nice place (may be a small charge there)
We overnight in rest areas, with a toilet on board, not a problem in that department, if there is a lot of skid marks in the rest area and we are the only ones there we move on to another rest area or a small town/village off the main highway and then ask if its ok to overnight in the local park.
Not sure where you're looking Margaret, but I've just looked at my Camps 6 book on page 99 and there's 74 listed, from Tweed Heads to just south of Port Macquarie.
I can't comment on the quality of the camps though.
There is nothing like the spots John's photos show around Qld for sure, but you can overnight in the rest areas and explore some great places through the day. I don't mind the rest areas, some find them noisy. I just count the dollars I'm saving by a free stopover.

Ditto. One can always use ear plugs, which I've done.
another good spot is at Ellenbough (spell Check) its out a bit from Port Macquarie past Warhope but a great spot close to a beautiful river. Has a toilet and worth a few days, good spots south of Sydney are Berry Showground, check first I heard it was closed. Delmeny Beach Camp ground is tops. These arnt free but very reasonable. Genoa is pretty good also.
Yes Ellensborough is supposed to be lovely and free. Haven't quite got there myself.
Berry Showgrounds have a great reputation, link below. It shows unpowered tariff $10. I thought powered used to be $15 but went up to $20, can see it listed though.
Bulahdelah has the showground available. Although not free (small charge, about $10 per nite.) It is close to the centre of town and very close to bowling club. Cheers BobnCol
