After speaking with a couple of GN who are planning a trip I found that quarantine information was not common knowledge, the link below will help.
For those of you who fish ensure that all your fishing gear is dry and clean, as these will come under scutiny. Vehicles should be free of mud and vegetable matter underneath.
Expect some delays at the inspection line once disembarked in Devonport. Sniffer dogs are used most days which are trained to pick up vegetable matter amongst other items.
When leaving the wharf there will be a guy/gal trying to give out a show bag, Take it as it is loaded full of information and coupons.
Hi useful information there but can you tell me about how much it cost to take a van ( ie express van that I made into camper ) over there and what about gas bottles?
measure your van front of tug to rear of van, then go to bookings and have a play, note that there are different seasons so diff prices. gas bottles must be secured in approved manner, loose bottles are collected and secured for travel then you pick up when disembarking. spare fuel cans etc are also required to be empty and washed out.
If your gas bottle is secured properly in its space in the caravan, its fine. I saw gas bottles being collected presumably to be returned to owners at end of trip.
Thanks for the info florinhill - very handy to know these things - I know they ae written in the "fine pring" - but need a magnifying glass to read some of that stuff!!! - Will make sure is clean and tidy when we are going over. Hoping to meet up with you.

Quarantine officers will look in your fridge too so don't stock up before you get on the boat. I had to throw away a bag full of my home grown tomatoes :(
I travel regularly on Spirit of Tasmania. My Motorhome is 6 meters long and cost $96.00 last time I travelled. Costs vary depending on month of the travel. Victoria has Quarantine regulations but I've never seen a Quarantine Officer on the Victorian side. You will be inspected on arrival at Devonport, Tasmania. I've only once seen a dog. Usually it's just a few questions, open the engine compartment, and usually a quick look inside the fridge, drawers etc. Basically they are looking for fruit and vegtables, so don't take any. If you have any on board, there is a disposal bin at the check point. Any fishing gear should be thoroughly clean and don't carry bait. Gas bottles connected are ok. Any loose bottles, full or empty should be declared before boarding. They will be taken and you collect them after you disembark. Very simple procedure. Do your booking online. If you do it by telephone there is a surcharge. Can't remember if it's an extra $20.00 or $50.00. Cabins are expensive. If you can sleep in a reclining chair, book the Ocean Recliners. They are the cheapest and quite comfortable. Be sure to make your booking as a Pensioner if applicable, to get a discount. If you are a CMCA member, note this in the booking for a discount.
