Ran into Dawa camped just out of our town a couple of months ago. At that stage had no idea who she was but dropped in to say g'day anyway as it was obviously a nomad camped there. Had a great chat followed up a few days later when she dropped in to home for the shower we'd offered. Hopefully the first of many nomads we'll get to meet once on the road full time in a few months. If any of you are coming through Gulgong before Christmas, please ask for directions & drop in.

If I didn't say g'day to people I'd live a very lonely life. It's usually me who starts the chat. "Hi. Where have you come from today:' I check our number plates. It's a great chat starter. "Where are you from in SA?' or in WA the plates can be regional, so if you recognise the "BM" - Broome, "GN" - Geraldton, "E" - Esperance etc. Or a feature of their van or car, or something which catches your interest is a good starter. It's a two-way street and someone has to start it. I learn so much from chatting to others. Just yesterday at the BP Blackall a group of motorcyclists on their way home from Alice caught a glimpse of "Granny", which prompted some questions. I also had my photo taken with "her. There's always something to say g'day with. If they're not interested you'll soon pick up the vibe, so just move on.

Yep, agree with Granny - that's the way to do it - ask where they have come from or are going to? Most people like to have a chat - and you can pick up on the ones who don't after a couple of minutes -
If no one talked, it would be a very lonely life!!

Gday...
Yep - Jules and Chris .... what I am trying to say is that, like you obviously, I have no difficulty initiating a conversation with "others" - whether couples or others. Unfortunately, what I am trying to suggest that it SEEMS that couples USUALLY do not seem inclined to initiate conversation with a lone bloke.
There's nothing judgemental in my observation, or comment, it just seems to be the way it is for some strange reason.
I'll continue to say Gday to one and all and gladly chat on anything they want to chat about.
I am such a fantastic, marvelous, intelligent, friendly, worldly and modest person, it is they who miss out
Cheers - John

It looks like I have started a topic here that many have opinions on and the extroverts out there will talk to anyone, as do I. Obviously the introverts don't push themselves on other people (they're not like that!) but many would love to be included in a quiet way in social occasions so I, for one, will be making an effort to talk to everyone! By the way, I've been in Bowen for a while and I'm hitting the road on sunday, towing a caravan for the first time ever, and not even sure where to go. Possible temp job in Charters Towers that I will learn more about tomorrow. if not then maybe Rockhampton or Emerald. Hope to see some of you on the road. Andy
We always say hi to anyone as we walk past but usually just get a hi back end of conversation, but when Hubby goes out and about he generally takes hours as he chats to anyone and they chat back.
But when I go out and about on my own I very rearly find anyone to chat to they all say hi end of it, me thinks that because I am in a wheelchair they either think I am dimwitted or they are not comfortable talking to me.(I don't bite)
So I now leave it up to Paul to bring them in to join our conversation.
So if you see someone in a wheelchair say hi and start a conversation we are normal people as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope to see some GN's soon.

Andy, if you go to Emerald, be aware that the town is full to bursting with people who work for the mines, and accommodation is very limited. Free-camps in the area are similarly full.
